aussies seem to have a particularly annoying culture, where the smarter part of the population are twinkish and ultraliberal in reaction to their stereotypically macho and unrefined underclass. It's not at all like Eastern Europe or even America where you get intellectuals who attempt to also be masculine. That seems very rare down under at least ime, and even more so in New Zealand. Basically if someone from australia says they read I assume they're a faggot now.

>they don't call it the country of cultural cringe for nothing

>The Cringe mainly appears in a tendency to make needless comparisons. The Australian reader, more or less consciously, hedges and hesitates, asking himself, “Yes, but what would a cultivated Englishman think of this?” No writer can communicate confidently to a reader with the “Yes, but” habit; and this particular demand is curiously crippling to critical judgement.
>There is a certain type of Australian intellectual who is forever sidling up to the cultivated Englishman, insinuating “I, of course, am not like these other crude Australians. I understand how you must feel about them; I should be more at home in Oxford or Bloomsbury” (the use of Bloomsbury as a symbol of intellectuality is badly out of date; but, then, so as a rule is the Australian Cringer).
>“... in the back of the Australian mind, there sits a minatory Englishman. He is not even the most suitable type of Englishman—not the rare pukka sahib with his deep still pool of imaginativeness, and his fine urbanity; not the common man with his blending of solidity and tenderness: but that Public School Englishman with his detection of a bad smell permanently engraved on his features, who has left a trail of exasperation through Europe and of smouldering hatred through the east, and whose indifference to the Commonwealth is not even studied.
>“Subconsciously the educated man feels a guilty need to placate this shadowy figure (Freud has a name for it). His ghost sits in on the tete-a-tete between Australian reader and writer, interrupting in the wrong accent.

Australian culture came about in the modern era, and before it could get on its feet, globalisation hits.

Do Australians read? Ofcourse, they do everything and anything, they are like children though, easily convinced.

As for the Australian male. Its pretty cringe worthy how hard a young man will try. Shows, how insecure identity is in Aus.

Now i do ag science fieldwork and listen to epic poetry while i'm harvesting and put classic fm on the workshop radio when i'm the only one in there all day and while no one i work with shares my tastes people don't go out of their way to mock me. Some are even interested, which surprised me at first.
In my experience anti-intellectualism is far more pronounced in teens than in adults. Australian adults hate anything they see as pretentious, but don't dislike literature or othet perceived wanky persuits like theatre, just the kind of person they stereoypically associate with the arts, my home town is wheat and canola central and you'll get called a fag as a kid for liking art or reading anything for pleasure, but the local arts council is always putting on musical theatre productions and the blokiest footballers i know will sing and dance on stage in them. High school is boring for anyone though, gotta have a go at someone over something.

The content of his ideas is rich, and present, but his prose seems to drag its content out through the cautiously-ajar opening of his mind portal one hair at a time, so that they emerge exhausted and somewhat beaten. The only feasible identity an Australian can have is a "Briton under the Southern Cross." That was what carried us through the first 150 years. Wasn't until the country got terminal AIDs in the late 60s that we triumphantly destroyed our heritage, the only thing we had to inherit and have spent ever since muddling through without it. We've basically given up now and are ready to surrender to Asia. The political and social elite have already capitulated. They think they're going to retain their status but they'll have another thing coming in a generation or so. The only thing this place has going for it is it is big enough you don't have to be in proximity to the worst of it. My ancestors were on the first fleet, settlers of South Australia, Queensland and New South Wales, on the first boat ashore at Gallipoli, fought at Pozieres, Hamel and the Hindenburg Line. They were at Darwin, the fall of Singapore and Kokoda. But it literally means nothing now and so next year when I go overseas for work I can't really find a reason to go back. Let the chinks have it and all the bourgeois faggots stew in it too.

Mate, thats not giving those people a fair go. We're all about fair goes, unless your smart, good looking, an abo or anyone who has aspirations. But mate, mate listen, let those people have their fair share of opinions. Its only fair, and australia's fair mate its in the anthem

I fucking hate the anthem. Its literally just "we're a bunch of fags who live on this huge, empty tract of land"
Waltzing matilda would be even worse, a homeless guy stealinga a sheep, running from the police and then killing himself. Real inspiring.

War songs suggest that war is one of our fundamental values. Perhaps it is, but I think that's kind of retarded. Literally only one war that we've fought has been in our own self-interest. Everything else has been to appease the Brits and Yanks.

So you cast the bait, right? Reel goes whizz. Then, as it dies away all too soon, a pain comes shooting up your ass. You look around and realise you've hooked bait into your own anus. Why do you keep doing this?

We've turned into a race of faggots because it's economically profitable to do so. If we want to return to classical Australian civilisation, we need to get rid of our addiction to money and "big business."

Australian here.
Growing up, I always felt superior because, though many parents struggled to get their children to read, my own struggled to make me stop.
I didn't just read shitty kids books all the time either.
I loved to read, and I still do thankfully.
Anyway, the rest of Australia probably read fuck-all from what I know, especially the younger ones.

Don't forget other factors: class and area and school, and all that shit.

An anecdotal example... My half sister grew up in a semi-rural town whose school environment ended up discouraging her from reading just about anything other than snaps and instagram comment threads. She then moved to a high school in the upper class area of the city. Apparently everyone there reads shit like Austen and Herodotus. Say what you want about the quality of that range, but you have to admit the contingencies throw their weight around here.

I guess that is a good point.
Most of my early childhood was spent overseas, away from Australia.
Though my primary school really was not full of bright kids. I remember there were a fair few Samoan kids, and I faintly remember having an autistic friend.

Ok, so you'd have some sort of idea what Australia looks like from the outside. I have no idea. I've lived here all my life, and can't tell intentions from external behaviours, in some sort of metaphorical sense. I know what the Australian nation, at each of its different levels, wants and doesn't want to be, but have no idea what it reeks of from across the water in the same way I can see the behaviour of the US but not really know its day-to-day functioning of individual intentions, hopes, dreams and nightmares.
