Do you just act on a commodity fetish by collecting books? If so, would you regard this as bad?
Obviously books are more than paper and printing ink, but it seems to me that they are often seen as more as they are.

Yeah probably
So-so, neither good nor bad
People have different reasons for buying and collecting books. I buy my favourites so I have them at hand to cite, since they're not available digitally.

You don't "act on commodity fetishism". It's the default relation of individuals to commodities under Capitalism. Every interaction one has with products, which is always already occurring, is that of fetishism. It's not a mind set or set of actions that one can overcome just by thinking or acting differently.

You probably won't ever fill it, and as long as you don't delete stuff off it you probably won't wear it down either.

Absolutely.

I had a collection of about 600 books that I had partly read, partly dumpstered. It was wonderful to be surrounded by them. It also very much loved being able to mention a book, then pull it out from the shelf and hand it to the person. In a sense, books lend physicality to the otherwise ethereal world of ideas.

However, it is also definitly a fetishism and after a few unpleasantly moves I culled the vast majority of what I had.

The more books I bought the more I ended up selling at a used book store. Now I just download pdfs.
