Uncontested: it's R. W. Emerson's "Essays: First Series."

If you disagree fite me. If you think it's anything by Melville or Whitman you have recognize that they wouldn't have realized their potential without having heard Emerson speak.

I suggest none of these to be the best, but some personal favorites:
>Winesburg, Ohio
>Nine Stories (Salinger)
>Billy Budd and the Piazza Tales
>Prufrock

Not the previous anon.

Most of them are very good, some are astounding, I think. Off the top of my head, my favourites include the standard ones... Hills like White Elephants and A Clean Well-Lighted Place. But there’s also A Sea Change and Light of the World, which are amazing. The Capital of the World. The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber. Che Ti Dice La Patria? Indian Camp. Big Two-Hearted River.

But really, just read through the book. There’s so much richness in the stories that he rarely attained in his novels.

The best American literature has to offer: a dumb tale about a whale written in horrendous purple prose, and the boring, animalistic macho fantasies of a repressed fag.
