Cheever writes the best short stories; Bellow's the most beautiful writer in general (of the bunch) but Roth wrote the best novels. Updike's severely underrated (and by far the best critic) which I take to be this thread's ultimate rationale. All the writers listed here are more than merely fine. The clear classic- agree or not- is Salinger (after all that).
