Why didn't he publish more work?

Also Salinger thread. What do you think are some of his main themes?

Being an insufferable faggot. No wonder you like him OP.

The increasing power of society over the individual seems to be one of his biggest concerns. Franny wants to follow the Way of the Pilgrim but I think deep down she realizes that kind of lifestyle is obsolete or even criminal.
Same with Holden when he says he wants to move away into the woods.

The Catcher in the Rye and most stories out of Nine Stories are really great but after that he becomes too occupied with spirituality and eastern religion for my taste

pretty much this

He didn't want to deal with the public exigencies of publishing. Writing had become purely a spiritual exercise for him.

I have no problems with his spiritual solutions, but they're hardly very useful.

I read Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters yesterday and I really enjoyed it. I thought Buddy Glass was a really interesting narrator.

So did I. Thanks for sharing. It seems to me that Buddy is Salinger's stand-in, and Seymour is his idealized self, or the man he always wanted to be.

But yeah, Buddy frequently talks about how difficult it is to sincerely put pen to paper, and I think Salinger started to have similar concerns.

Catcher In The Rye Part Two: Phoning It In Because Daddy Needs A New Deer Stalker Hat.

broke: Holden is an insufferable faggot I hated catcher in the rye

woke: Holden was a flawed, but sincere character struggling to deal with his brother's loss and the general tragedy of life.

bespoke: Holden was right about everything

He has other works besides Catcher you fucking hacks and they’re great. His short stories are great. Nabokov loved Salinger, Hemingway loved Salinger, Updike loved Salinger, Faulkner loved Salinger. Catcher is not the only thing he wrote and, in fact, I deem it inferior to his other short stories. So many writers accept that he revolutionized the American short story, his style of dialogue was very influential, he helped inaugurate the “slice-of-life” short story style.

I love him and Joyce for their publishing minimalism. They weren't prolific but what they put out is damn near perfect. I feel like Salinger didn't enjoy writing all that much but was proud of what he dispersed.

J.D. Salinger - Three Stories PDF:
https://mega.nz/#!8EIBkCTR!StrQxGi46MFdc5QbDDwWvAlSyIlDERkuSl89H2RgTiE

>As many of you are aware, a leak of J.D. Salinger’s heretofore unpublished “Three Stories” found its way to What.CD in the last day. It is our current belief that this leak originated as a physical copy on eBay and made its way to our site in digital form thereafter, although we cannot confirm this lineage at present.

>The official request for these stories has existed on What.CD for some time, and although many thought it would never be filled or otherwise viewed it as a harmless act of communal wishing, the request’s existence was in no way a formal endorsement by What.CD Staff.

>The site was temporarily brought down so that we could work to preemptively resolve issues related to the leaked content and the publicity it has received.

>Our first priority can and must be the protection of What.CD. Due to this case’s rare and unlikely circumstances, due to the unnecessary and unwanted attention the Salinger leak has brought, and due to our desire to comply with the desires of the Salinger estate or other involved parties in this matter, the content has been removed from What.CD. It is not to be re-uploaded under any circumstances, and anyone found doing so will have their account disabled.

>We thank you for your patience as we continue to resolve this matter. Additional details will become available as is necessary per the discretion of the Staff.
