So I'm with a girl and she has on one of those pointy goddamn sad little cone bras and she asks me to take off my goddamn shirt before we make out. So I do, and know what the hell she does? She laughs at my back acne for chrissakes, just point and laughs right there in the bedroom and all. So I call her a phony and get up to leave the goddamn room but she grabs me by the arm and looks at me with these big ol' wet movie starlett doe eyes. Christ, that always kills me. It really does. So I make up my mind to stay. and she's giddy and beside herself and all and we start to make out but then I get this feeling, like way deep down in my stomach, this queezy feeling, and I remember jane gallagher in her red and whtie sweater and I realize what I'm doing is just wrong and phony and all and I just up and walk out of there. And then, on the train home, wouldn't you damn well know it, it just starts up and raining and I feel like gods up there, but not with the apostles, just alone, and he's judging me for what ive just done. But I couldn't help it. That phoebe is just so sexy. She really is.

>> No.11357403

It improves a lot of you don't take it seriously. Holden is kind of pathetic but every word out of his mouth is solid gold.

>Not only is Catcher in the Rye a superb exercise in narrative voice, the character of Holden Caufield is a compelling look at the trauma of loss (represented through the death of his little brother and the suicide of his classmate) and his quest to ensure the innocence of childhood is compelling while misguided, but that's what gives the story its ultimate pathos.

Nah, it's unironically a masterpiece.

For clarification, I don't hate it due to Holden's whiny character, nor would I hate it for the lack of likeability. If anything, a layer of pathetic character, or navel-gazing, would have value, had there been worthy design to portray it.
The issue with Catcher in the Rye is similar to American Psycho, two works signifying a flawed, albeit narcissistic, character: the flawed is the surface level, merely supplementing a character that's a one-dimensional force of that same flaw, with any other worth of the character simply becoming a void. Tell me, what importance does a narrative contain, if that narrative is entirely comprised of weakness and self-hood, and nothing of the erudite, of the compelling states of introspection? Holden is Orson Welles' perception of Woody Allen: arrogance. What use does that have, other than portraying something mentally weak in text and soul?

Git gud.

Don't listen to OP, it's one of the best novels ever written by an American.

Holden grows and learns to be less controlling — letting Phoebe grab the brass ring, realizing he can't scratch out the graffiti, etc. The whole point of the book is to watch him change. That's what stories do.

It's the perfect book to read at different points in your life. At least once when you're in your teens then again when you're 24+

Holden seems a lot less "whiny" and you appreciate his outlook for what it is the second time around because now there is a certain distance between you and Holden. He's a lot more likable (and funny) because in your late 20's you (hopefully) can no longer identify with a character like him.

I think for first time readers there is some sort of Jungian shadow-play going on that leads a lot of people to outright reject and dislike Holden because they identify so strongly with him.

I think this is what >>11357403 was getting at in terms of seriousness.
