Its officially Bloomsday in James' home town of Dublin. Over the next day everyone you've ever known will be reading Ulysses to celebrate.

How are you spending your 16th?

"Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:

—Introibo ad altare Dei.

Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:

—Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit!

Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak."

Its the worst kind of middlebrow pat-on-the-back-look-upon-my-cultural-awareness-ye-mighty-and-despair event on earth and it will be marked by fairly unfulfilled middle aged men wandering around Dublin calling things 'life-affirming.'

And I actually like Joyce.

That sentence but starting from Buck Mulligan I think.

In concept it's definitely grander than Ulysses; instead of individual consciousnesses in daytime it's the dream consciousness of all mankind and it's pulled off in the most believable manner you could possibly pull something like that off. Plus it has his best individual passages. The ending paragraphs of FW outdo Molly's monologue imo.

Hope all of you are looking like this right now. No excuses.

Yes, the OP was right: Bloomsday is general all over America now as well. It was falling softly upon the Bog of Massachusetts and, further westwards, softly falling into the dark mutinous Mississippi waves
