Did He even read all of it?
If yes, how and when?

I heard rumors of him reading 4000 wpm; that must be true then.

i can't believe how nice harry is with this list
95% of it should be trimmed down
guess the old goat was too scared of reproach from the school of ressentiment... or vainly wanted to show off how much he's read. either way, a fat L

Give us your top 5% of the list then.

What do you mean? That isn't a lot to read in a lifetime. He's been an academic for decades, is that really a surprising amount to you?

just look how he bloats the canon the closer it gets to year current
the brevity of the beginning should be constant but it isn't for some (((reason)))
i guess you could say "beginning would be larger if more ancient texts survived" but i'm a literary determinist; if they got thru the fires and destruction that's because they deserved to

i mean, wilkie collins? samuel daniel? (most of the english or irrelevant bugauthors he lists?) honestly think anybody's gonna save their shit when apocalypse hits?
it's pretty obvious who should and shouldn't be part of the canon desu
no need to mention every writer who's been famous at some point for some book

i do like his inclusion of poe, since i thought he hated him. guy davenport making it is also pretty neat, but this list reads less like critical discrimination and more a shotgun blast in the blindness of vain prophecy

>> No.11322401

Horrible list.

>>11321816
90% of the Americans/English writers, you mean. I know his public is mainly English-speaking, but it's still a joke. He has a place for Tom Stoppard, but no place for the great Provençal troubadours.

Also, there's very little Medieval stuff, and he has almost no acquaintance with Portuguese and Brazilian literature, despite being supposedly a master commentator on dozens of Spanish-language authors. I don't even know Hungarian lit, but from what little I have learned about it, it looks like his list is also horrible on that particular front.

Really, he made mess.

>> No.11322423

Reminder that Bloom didn't want to write this list but only included it because its what the plebs wanted.

We lost Aristotle's and Democritus' books for no fucking reason at all, though. Parmenides', Empedocles' and Sappho's poems were also lost even though they were heavily influential and praised by every ancient who knew his shit.

well in the past no one gave a shit about Aristotle and Democritus because plato was all the shit so they were kinda forgotten.

In the preface of the actual book he said that list isn’t supposed to be a lifetime reading-list, and extrapolates that even if you did nothing but read 24/7 you probably still wouldn’t finish the list or comprehend the deeper nuances of every single work
