Years ago I started reading the Black Swan and I sort of liked it but not enough to get past page 100. I'm a physics PhD and code Bayesian inference algorithms for augmented reality at work, if that means anything in this context.
But then two years back or so I discovered that he's vocal on pretty reactionary topics, and seeminlgy anti-left winged at that. I might be wrong about where to put him, but I'm generally skeptical about anything who feels like debating on twitter is a good thing. Spend your time with people, not with other stubborn people on the web. At least not under your real name.

You think you understand the world, as well as HOW to understand it, but you actually don’t.

And how is reading his work going to fix that

Yeah, pretty much. I also couldn't finish The Black Swan. He goes on so many (boring) tangents/rants/anecdotes, he sounds full of himself calling others middlebrow while being the definition of middlebrow.
And all in all it's just not well written.

He's basically /pol/ mashed with /sci/. Very good at pointing out problems with the use of statistics but also perfectly happy to discuss haplotypes and how white he is. Great shitposter too, have yet to find an article of his without spelling mistakes.

What do you do? What I was trying to get at was why do that book and that aphorism help you make such a realisation?

>> No.11317846

>>11317741

its more like something that i already knew but didn't have the experience to say

"Work destroys your soul by stealthily invading your brain during the hours not officially spent working; be selective about professions."

"You remember emails you sent that were not answered better than emails that you did not answer."

i could go on with more aphorisms but one of the main concepts behind the book is that debt and "employment" are just delusions to make slavery seem acceptable. and i'm an accountant

I have that exact same feeling when reading his stuff. But he also said in the black swan that a boring and stable job plus risky stuff (like writing books) is the best combination (apart from something like making your own business

Didn't know Tim Schafer wrote books.
