What fiction makes you contemplate deeply on every page? Similar to Joyce's Ulysses and Borges' Ficciones? Is Pale Fire by Nabokov like this? What are some good ones that make you think a lot?

not at all, Pale Fire is all Papa Cornfather's medieval fanfiction circlejerk, it's only interesting because it's a cliche insanity novel written in "totally not a novel guys!" form.

Houellebecq is very cerebral though, at least in books of his which revolve around scientism

I've never heard someone say a good thing about Pale Fire before, which is a shame because the title alone makes me want to read it

I kinda slapped Nabokov here a bit. Main character's narrative is about a fictional country and inquisition which took place in it. It felt a lot to me (and some of my friends) like Nabokov really wanted to write a historical novel full of castles and knights, but, as that wouldn't suit his oeuvre, he decided to put out a postmodern novel with lots and lots of knights and castles being part of main character's schizophrenia.

If a book forces you to do this, it is above your level of comprehension and would be impractical to read. If you never do this without being forced, you aren't reading properly.

Paul Beatty's The Sellout is more densely packed humor than one can imagine without actually reading it, and you are forced into strange positions with the aspects of American laugh that he gets you to laugh at in every single sentence.
