Reading an essay for my English class at CC:
>At the core of the argument that we should resist all government regulation of speech is the ideal that the best cure for bad speech is good, that ideas that affirm equality and the worth of all individuals will ultimately prevail. This is an empty ideal unless those of us who would fight racism are vigilant and unequivocal in that fight.

>think of 4chan

The issue is that m00t and whoever else runs this website hardly endorse anything we say. Freedom of speech is a very different matter when an individual is being defamed from an ivory tower in the form of television, newspapers, etc...

Defamation laws are there to protect us.

What are you talking about? 4chan never has and never will affirm equality and the worth of all individuals. 4chan is a world where every anon thinks he's better than every other person.

Agreed.

The same principle applies to libertarians who think it's acceptable for business to openly discriminate.

Obviously you don't understand the point.
What it's saying is that the ideal will not be fulfilled, and the sentiment will not be affirmed, unless people who endorsed it were forever on guard and constantly fighting for it.
4chan is a perfect example of this ideal going unfulfilled because it's simply too tiring to attempt to fight it. Bad speech wins out over good.
