Compared to other Evola books it's actually good, it's not only his thoughts on alchemy but pretty much also his thoughts on the ancient greco-roman religion for a lot of it. He tries to explain how it's a spiritual system, which i don't really buy all of it, but the seond half of it so far is all just metaphysics about death and being vs becoming.
Neat stuff, would recommend that over his political books any day of the week.

Don't know, but don't let the thickness of the book fool you, it was easily 3-4 times longer than the top book.

I really enjoyed the book, even though the beginning was a bit slow. The second half of the book was grea though, and the last chapters really made my blood boil due to a certain traitor. I have another book from the same author (The bad girl) that I still haven't read, because I hear it's not as good, but I'll get to it eventually.

Have you read anymore books of his? I'm also interested in Captain Pantoja and the Secret Service.

I'm planning on giving spanish lit a chance. Beside the feast of the Goat, I've also read some Borges and Rulfo, all of which I enjoyed quite a bit. I'll look for some Cortázar and Fuentes next order, see if I find anything. Thanks for the tip!

No, camera works just fine. They both have a pink side, and Cancer Ward some more pink. Still safe to buy!

i actually read neitzsche before kierkegaard. i dont think his idea of an ubermensch is in total contrast with believing in Christ. i'd actually like pop-Christianity to go away indefinitely.

>> No.11307966

>>11307726
a life-affirming christianity is not in conflict with the ubermensch. Thus Spake Zarathustra demonstrates this. Pop-christianity can be much more attributed to the casual comfort with sadness that Kierkegaard entertains throughout his writings

what do you mean by casual comfort with sadness? i didn't find fear and trembling or the sickness unto death comforting in the least.

because kierkegaard introduces discomforting conceptions of existential dread which then become set as the norms of a kierkegaardian's existence and understanding of life. If you accept what discomforting claims he makes, you find some comfort in accepting these premises to then make your resulting choices and beliefs from them. It sets the wrong starting point, and I'd reckon the more correct one is found in TSZ

by that logic, doesnt accepting pretty much any way of thinking present the same issues? isnt accepting the idea of an ubermench, or overcoming a pointless existence, offer a similar kind of comfort? to even believe it's possible?

>> No.11308182

>>11308129
I see how the form of my logic could be taken that way, but I meant it more specifically in reference to the content of Kierkegaard. With such absolute stress upon sin, guilt, suffering, and individual responsibility as the core phenomena to be focused on, one has the cards stacked against them from the start to prevent a Nietzschean, life-affirming philosophy based upon a jouissance accomplished after the transvaluation of all values. The ubermensch, in overcoming these phenomena, does not retain them as his starting point, but forges a new starting point beyond their dichotomy of sin/grace, good/evil, etc.

i could see how original sin would contradict the ubermensch ideal.
