DeLillo is the greatest living writer. Discuss his work here.

Furthermore, what is required reading to further understand Mao II?

I've only read Ratner's Star. I liked it, but I heard that it's very different from his typical style?

It's true. I witnessed him get hit by a bus in new york. The windshield was a little dirty but it's hard to miss something like that from the front seat.

Ratner’s Star is hilarious. Extremely mirth-provoking. But yeah, very different than anything else I’ve read of his.

Halfway through Cosmopolis right now, pretty good so far. Liked the movie a lot as well. Where do I go next, White Noise?

Bill Gray is DeLillo's imagination for what Hemingway would have written about had he been born in the 40s or 50s. Look at the language used in the book.

Yes. White Noise, then Libra, The Names, then give Underworld a go - everything he wrote after that has been meh. I could not stomach Ratner's Star fwiw

I genuinely think he is overrated and too "cerebral." His books are sort of interesting commentaries on contemporary issues, but they don't move you or make you feel anything for the characters or life. He is a genius though for writing this in 1991:

'Years ago I used to think it was possible for a novelist to alter the inner life of the culture. Now bomb-makers and gunmen have taken that territory. They make raids on human consciousness.'

>> No.11281025

>>11280953
thats from Mao II and was the opinion of Bill at the beginning of the book before he changed and realized that his conception of novel writing had been misguided. i.e. not DeLillo's opinion. If you don't feel moved by his work maybe you should try Underworld. I dont know of anyone who can capture the eeriness and underlying mysticism at the bottom of our historical period like he can.

halfway through libra, and i must say i much prefer white noise. i like the parts about oswald, but the rest is meh for me. it feels too plot-driven and humorless at times. is underworld or mao ii more like white noise?

>> No.11281530

bumping and i also just realized that delillo practically reused a line from white noise in libra ("there is a tendency of plots to move toward death").

>> No.11281673

his earlier books are more like white noise. even white noise is really bleak compared to the early stuff. everything after WN is a total dirge and feels exhausting to read

I'm gonna read White Noise, probably in this very month.

Wish me luck, lads!

Curious that I haven't read him earlier, since that, as an italo-brasiliano, I love knowing the work of my fellow italo-americani.
