So I just bought this. Having never read Joyce, what am I in for? How should I approach it?

Wow that cover is shite. The book itself is great though. You don't need any prep work for Portrait. Just read the thing.

first few pages are from the eyes of a baby thats why it's so disjointed and difficult to understand, it gets easier

I read that passage at around four in the morning and really couldn't tell if I was having an aneurysm or not. Thanks.

Ulysses>Portrait>=Dubliners>Finnegans Wake
Portraits really great and as long as you stick with it through the longer, more difficult to read parts (Stephen's speech on aesthetic theory sticks out to me) it really is a beautiful work of self-reflection and philosophy. Prefer it to Dubliners only slightly, just because of how relateable Joyce writes Stephen, as well as the huge emotional core of a book.

ngl I really like the Penguin Deluxe Classics editions (you're right though this one looks like Tumblr shit), the Dubliners one is great with the first and last quotes on either end of the dust-cover thing: think this one does the same thing.
