Just started reading, still very early in. He seems to tell everyone that he is a human being, with a little condescension in there. Everyone looks at him in disgust and he is dragged down to the floor, face first. Is there something im missing? Was it solely because of his condescension?

Book im referring to is infinite jest btw, if that wasnt obvious.

Are you talking about the very first chapter? No oje can understand Hal because he is speaking gibberish and drooling (you learn why later). He gets taken away in an ambulance. I dont rememver him being pushed to the floor?

Yes first chapter, after just re reading it im starting to think there is more to it, as if it were a delusion of hals mind. Either that or a huge misinterpretation by me. So I think this thread may be useless. An unlucky spot to end my reading for the night i guess.

you gotta read the whole book desu but obvs answers include:
1. He is being treated like an animal i.e., dehumanized which is apart of Hal's larger nightmare of being misunderstood/alienated etc. (which is kind of funny when you take a step back and wonder what it must be like as an admissions officer to have a kid start making guttural noises at you and going crazy)
2. The obvious issue of disconnection at play. Hal CAN NEVER BE UNDERSTOOD which has implications for language, social relationships in post-modernity, empathy, etc. What is left or those who cannot be understood? They get pinned to the floor against their will.
3. LITERALLY, Hal has a condition that flares up whenever he gets stressed about communication/social interactions and renders him speaking gibberish, drooling all over the place, which he only makes worse by raising his arms to try to signal that he's okay etc.
4. Muh misunderstood des[erate genius trope (straight Barthelme rip-off in how he goes about showing it, too).
I could say more but really just read it the whole thing. It's a lightweight rollercoaster of sorts.

Basically, Hal is a smart kid (like they try to argue) but has developed a condition where he somehow can’t speak properly and only spouts out gibberish, even when he thinks he is speaking very slowly, calmly, and clearly.

Isn't it also implied that he can only write gibberish at that point too?
