He was actually diagnosed with syphilis. The only thing you might argue is if that diagnosis was correct which some recent writers question.

Seeking some comfort at prostitutes was a pretty common and normal behaviour among bachelors in those days since most females refused to have sex if they weren't married or at least engaged.

Step one: Stop obsessing over it, focus on shit that matters. If you don't have anything that matters going on, you have bigger problems than where to stick your dick in.

Step two: Keep talking to girls, keep talking to boys, be somewhat social. Do SOMETHING with your life. If you wonder about the bothering, ask yourself whether you'd talk to a guy in the same situation and whether it'd be okay if a guy talked to you like that.

Step three: There is no step three.

To be honest, I don't know if Circe's Guard died a virgin or if he didn't, but it'd suit his personality.

You have to realise, it's not hard to have sex: if things go completely wrong, you just go see a hooker. (Prostitution was even more common and socially acceptable in those days than it is now.)

The real question is: with whom do you want to have sex? Are there people you don't want to have sex with?
The normal answer to this is: yeah, well, I have some standards, I don't want him/her to be too ugly or disgusting, stuff like that.
But there are also more elaborated or psychological hurdles. For example, you might demand to be at least in love with the person you have sex with. Or you might demand, having sex with a person doesn't contradict your personal ideas of moral.

Therefore, it doesn't matter if you're able to seduce a girl - if you don't want to have sex with her due to your standards (considering her or yourself) you simply don't have sex with her.
Since Kirkegaard was pretty demanding when it came to his own intellectual honesty and moral integrity, I very well imagine him to rather reject a girl (he could have very well slept with) than to do it just because of the experience.

Btw. having sex for the sake of having sex is actually a very modern "ideal" - in all the history of mankind (until ~50 years ago) having sex wasn't of such a great importance at all.

Neither it is now outside of the incel cycles. Most people see sex is part of their self exploration, besides it usually feels better than jerking off. Seeking more pleasure doesn't take idealisation from society, with better protection and birth control there are simply fewer reasons not not to do it.

>Instead, abstinence was an ideal.

Well, do you consider a 40 or 50yo guy who's still a virgin "normal". A lot of people don't. And those guys don't consider themselves to be "normal" too as far as I know about them.
I don't think, Newton or some medievil monks ever considered their virginity a stain - but a lot of people actually think it is a some kind of flaw.

Ah, good point. Although it still applies to some clergy today. Besides, someone like Dali resisted getting laid for a while and it didn't affect his social status. Serena or Venus waited quite a bit till marriage too and while it is/was uncommon, no one really cared that much. Sure neither of the examples staying a virgin all their life but that was always uncommon. A middle aged person being a virgin isn't normal in the sense it's usually the norm to get kids earlier, and someone who doesn't will get considered somewhat weird, whether they are virgins or not.

>I wish, I knew what its origins were, quite an interesting subject imo.
My guess would be relation to stds, protection and dangers of childbirth with possessiveness mixed it, though it doesn't explain while it was less of a thing before Christianity or how we're slowly moving the opposite way, with guys perception of their masculinity being associated to losing theirs.

Don't listen to the idiots in this thread.

There's a little explored principle of the magnetic duality of the heart, and the manner in which it acts on the universe. Focus on the subtle changes in your sensation, and in feeling, in light, in mood. Especially focus on the subtle changes of mood in social interactions. How different moods and sensations come and go like tides within normal social interaction, and how, rather than acting on one person, or then acting on the other, as though they had between them two out of sync wind up clocks, that the tensions of people are acting in the invisible space between them, pulling and repulsing them inside some superhuman extra-sensory realm beyond our comprehension and control. In a word, start using your heart as an eye, which is not simply perceiving purely interior sentiments, but an entirely real and entirely concealed world beyond comprehension.

Once you've started learning to do this, you can better maneuver through the social landscape, you can start to feel the desire a woman might have for you, and you can project your desire, or at least nurture and fuel it, even silently and across distances. Abstaining from masturbation, then using meditation to build internal sexual tension and desire inside yourself is good practice to this end. Stroke the flames of lust within yourself, control them, and you can then inflict them on the world.

This is not enough though. You must free yourself of all stupid sentimentality. Act on your viral instincts. If you're rejected or rebuffed, cast it aside from your thoughts and move on in life. Read the Gita, and act. Love with your body, hold your mind and heart aloof.

Women are contemptuous of the impatient and detest men who hesitate. It's a paradox, but always keep it in mind.

A great many men will go and sleep with a lot of women and then come to believe that it is some incredible skill that they posses. In fact, when a girl decides to sleep with someone its because she wants to sleep with someone, not because that specific man possesses some carnal skill or charm or by any innate virtue. Tame and break your ego, otherwise sex will destroy your soul and make your personality intolerable. If you want to sleep with women, go to someplace where lots of women are looking for sex (bars, strip clubs, tinder, etc.), and make yourself sexually available. There's no pride in being a masturbation tool, and don't let society (which is corrupt and morally sick) tell you there is, or that it is virtuous. Dignity is superior to gluttony, and its only a sick and gluttonous people who believe otherwise.

Finally, sex is a means to the end of a family: to producing kids and finding pleasure in your lover. Don't loose sights in these aims. The man who has had sex with a thousand woman, and produced no children nor found love, is a miserable virgin compared to the man who has sincerely loved only one woman and fathered children with her.

>A middle aged person being a virgin isn't normal in the sense it's usually the norm to get kids earlier, and someone who doesn't will get considered somewhat weird

It's pretty interesting, human societies pretty much always contradicted evolution. According to evoulution the most fitting beings should be the ones who are able to reproduce.
In human societies, the lower classes were always the ones who were expected to reproduce while the upper classes weren't. If you were a monk or a scientist, it was fine or even expected if you didn't breed.
Just as today: if you're a member of a higher caste, your focus isn't expected to be on reproduction, it's expected to be on your career, your insights, whatever. If you're a women, it actually hinders your career, if you breed...

Human ethics seem to be totally flawed...

O don’t buy this view.

So, the point is having children and spreading your genetic material, or else you are a failure? Says who? Even if you spread your genes eventually your descendence will die out, and even if it keeps moving forward. And even if it dosent die out humanity will eventually disappear; the universe itself won’t last forever. It’s like that master-monk in Mishima’s The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, that, when a student discovers that he see geishas, says something like “So what that I soil my hands with drink and girls: all it’s meaningless in the end and everything will disappear. It dosent matter”. The student then gets mad because he feels that that Monk is like some corpse that keeps fresh and dosent rot away.

But back to the point. Why have children if you don’t like children? Let’s say you want to perpetuate yourself, your best move is to do something extraordinary and force yourself into the collective psyche. More than children great deeds seem a parcial-victory against death and emptiness, yet even such victory can only last for some scraps of time, for humanity and the minds that keep your memory alive will eventually disappear, and it will be as you have never existed.

I have a young wife and we love each other and like to have sex just for the pleasure of it. Why would I want kids when I have so much things to do that I hardly have time to do them all? And then there is the point that, when your children are old enough, they will go after their own dreams, and you will be alone again.

Houellebecq once expressed a pretty interesting opinion on that: he said morals tend to be opposed to a society's vitality. When there's a vital society full of zest for life (as during the Elisabethan era) you needed morals to inhibit it, so all the joy of life wouldn't have to many unintended consequences. If you have a lifeless society without much sex drive on the other hand, morality, in turn, tries to oppose it.

He basically meant our society's obsession with sexuality was a product of our individual and unconscious lack of interest in sex.

Surely.

But it makes sense. If you have a huge libido, the scandalous glimmer of a naked female calf under her skirts might be enough to make you go absolutely nuts. If your libido is dampened down on the other hand, you might need full-grown hardcore pornography or something similar to even be able to get horny.

I’m 31 actually.

I don’t understand why you people value procreation so much that you find irritating even the thought of other people not wanting children.

Do I like children? Yes, when they are polite and gentle. I love to talk with them, and tell them stories, or playing football with them. I have always been like by children too, perhaps because I am sincere. When I like a kid they know I like them, and when they are spoiled and uneducated brats I don’t make any effort to hide the fact that I don’t like them and that I think their parents are doing a terrible job.

Now, why I don’t want children? Well, if I am to have them I will try to do my best to raise them well, and that takes a lot of work and effort. Right now I am more preoccupied with my literary career and with my job (I am a lawyer). To be frank if I could survive only with my writing I would have abandoned the law firm a long time ago.

I have published and staged plays and have started to gain some notoriety. Now I am working on my first novel, and its taking a lot of time and effort. The idea behind it is really good, however it will a lot of time to research all the material I need. I wake up early to write, then I have my job and after I came back I work on my writing some more. Some nights I need to go out with my wife, and weekends I usually travel and rest. If I were to have children all my routine would be changed, and since women work outside today you don’t have the option of simply charging them with the job of raising the kids alone while you do whatever you have to do out of the house.

I work like a fanatic in my writing, but with children a good deal of my time and effort would be deviated for their sake, and I don’t want that.

>>11266767

Even if I do something great I will go extinct and rot, it will only take a little more time for any memory of me to disappear, yet it is inevitable.

Now tell me: do you think that having children for the same of perpetuate yourself isn’t a little bit egocentric too? For me it’s quite obvious that most religious people in the end are actually deeply egocentric: they are only in it because they want to live forever, to exist forever on some sort of paradise with their family (and don’t forget: many of them also want the people they don’t like or agree with to go to hell). That many of those people see raising a family as an epitome of the well-lived life is actually quite telling: deep down it’s all about “my survival” and “my memory” and “my legacy”.

Also, I’m at work now and don’t have much to do. So I am enjoying some rest while posting here: to me its actually a very therapeutic experience.

I know people, buddy. I have had contact with religious people all my life: talking to them, seeing them talking to each other, hearing how they console themselves, hearing how they fight, what they say when they are angry, etc. Knowing the roots of human motivation and behavior makes you understand much more what is behind its functioning than a philosophical study of religion.

For example: the fact that you sound angry (easy to see even before you posted yopurself that you are angry) tell me more about what lies behind your faith than the specific creeds of that faith.

I know you are going to doubt me, but whatever.

I am 6'1, blond with green eyes. Naturally I go to the gym and have never been fat. My wife says I look like Michael Fassbender.

I do not think I look like Fassbender: he's more handsome than I am. Probably my wife wanted to find an actor who looks just like me just to play. My wife look a lot like Audrey Hepburn (only more tanned), so I call her Audrey from time to time. I showed a video of Audrey Hepburn winning an Oscar for my mother-in-law and the old lady almost fell back: "Wow, I really thought it was Erica at first"

But before you think I'm painting a perfect life, I'll tell you right away:

>My wife and I fought a lot (usually for stupid reasons)
>A new law that passed in my country is likely to greatly decrease the amount of clients of the office in which I work (though many parts of that law are likely to be cut because they are unconstitutional)
>I suffer from terrible anxiety and panic attacks
>I practically just go from home to work and work from home (and feel that I am loosing great opportunities to live more, to see more countries, more people, to take part in more experiences)

In other words: I have many problems and I do not live a perfect life. And to anybody here that thinks that having a girlfriend/wife is a solution for all your problems, think again: you are going to have a whole new forest of problems when you start having a serious relationship with someone.

It's mostly about finding people you have something in common with. When you have something in common with people, even with crippling social anxiety (as I have), you can find a way to start conversation and then prod it along by listening and engaging with what you hear. It's hard to do artificially (as you have to pretend you care about conversations you're not invested in), but if you find someone who shares interests with you it's fairly eas. Unfortunately the onlyway to find people like that is to join various groups, so it can be a crapshoot. Either way, go into it as a learning experience with people and you should be okay in the long run. Just expect to deal with some disappointment, as (like everyone) very few people will have interests in common with you.

If that's true, why aren't we all rushing out to sperm banks right now?

If it has to be actual sex, why is sex still possible with contraceptives? Doesn't this counter-act the supposed overarching biological imperative?

Are people who have sex solely for recreational, non-reproductive purposes similarly failing under your criteria for biologically intrinsic fulfilment?

But if it simply has to be sexual contact with a girl, which requires some radical, as of yet heard justification on your part, for whatever reason, what counts as "sex"? Does oral or hand stuff count? If I jerk off onto a girl, does that not count because it's basically the same as me just jerking off? If she jerks me off, does that count more? Why or why not?

Is it possible you're a self-hating and profoundly insecure young man who's semi-addicted to the internet and is venting his own feelings of sexual inadequacy because you believe yourself to be a failure in light of your own "biological imperative", which is really an incredibly transparent over-compensatory mechanism used to lend "scientific" validation to your own deeply emotionally fraught feelings around sex?
