My mum said that Dan Brown was a good author.

She also mentioned that Dickens was rubbish, and Ayn Rand was the biggest piece of Bull she has ever read.

Well, my mom reads Particia Cornwell, Sujata Massey, Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes. And she wants me to read them too.

She also thinks nonfiction is bullshit and doesn't develop you as a person in any way. My father, on the other hand, never reads fiction.

I can't believe both of them have gradutated from university.

“I wish I were a commander in chief in India. The first thing I would do to strike that Oriental Race with amazement… I should do my utmost to exterminate the race upon whom the stain of the late cruelties rested… with… merciful swiftness of execution, to blot it out of mankind and raze it off the face of the Earth“ -Charles Dickens (emphasis on DICK)

they signify a section of the quote not relevant, e.g. he only wanted the first and last parts as the rest is rambling some crap or w/e

things can change a lot when you leave some parts out, i know its pretty hard to see the quote as not being racist to the core but i'd just like to see the entire thing

in regard to his person i'd say yes because it's a douchebag move to be racist. when thinking about his work i'd say no because i dont think his work is racist (not to sure about this because i only read some of his work) and its fun to read at times when you are feeling like reading dickens because its fun and im having fun and im happy.

Seriously? Pretty much everyone was an Imperialist Rascist asshat back then. It was just how people thought. It was the motherfucking Victorian Era. Hell, he died only like 6 years after the American Civil war if that gives you a point of reference. Also, slavery in Britain wasn't abolished until 1833, which was during Dicken's lifetime.

no it's not that, he keeps all relevant parts in, just takes out stuff not related to it, the "..." there could have been Dickens referring to something else entirely, before coming back to his original point.

Lovecraft was racist, Conrad was racist. You need to learn that sometimes it doesn't fucking matter. Some work can stand on it's own as a must-read regardless of the author's views.

>> No.1126314

>>1126225

this

no reason to start hating writers from this period for being racist. It's not an excuse because they were still buttfucks for thinking it, but whatever.

If anything you should just admire the fuck out of the people who spoke out against imperialism/colonialism during the Victorian Era

>> No.1126317

>>1126314
i understand that it was normal to think others were inferior in that time but what dickens basically said was that he wanted to wipe them out, for me that sounds liek he took it to the next level racism 2.0

>> No.1126320

>>1126317

that's true. I never liked his books anyway so it doesn't bother me, but yeah I'm guessing a lot of people during that period wouldn't have complained. They were srsbzns with that white man's burden shit

>>1126320

actually white man's burden shit contradicts Dickens' desire to kill them all. but you know what I mean

you can't really compare dan brown to charles dickens.

dan brown is essentially a writer of nonfiction. his novels are research papers in history and art history, but he markets them as fiction and inserts a protagonist so that they'll sell.

the da vinci code is as reliable a work of art history as any college textbook.
