I like books and literature and metaphors and all that shit, but my stamina sucks. The act of reading is such a passive experience, that I usually go for less than an hour before nodding off. Even worse, when I was younger, I could just tear through books no problem. I worry that either I'm getting older, or that adult literature is just kinda dull.

I'd probably read a lot more if the act itself wasn't so damn boring.

Anyone else have this problem?

Problem? Be happy that you didn't turn into a hobby-driven fiction-reading bookworm with nothing to offer to society.

Maybe you just aren't meant for the life of the mind.

The internets speed and usability have gotten you accustomed to a constant quick intake of varied information. Books probably pale in comparison to you.

This sorta stuff crossed my mind too--the idea that maybe my brain's been rewired. But I don't buy it. I can really enjoy slow moving films and have no problem consuming the classics of that medium. Videogames are the other extreme, though. Pretty much the only one's I'll get through are the really engaging ones, like Mass Effect.

Have all you guys really read Atlas Shrugged? Because I fear that's one book I'll never wake up from if I dare give it another shot. Ayn Rand will be the angel singing me to my rest.

You can't re-wire your brain by surfing the internet. If you spend less time on short-attention-span stuff and more time reading long stuff, you'll get used to it again and it won't feel difficult anymore. (here's a nice way to wean yourself off: longform.org)

There's also the chance that you're reading the wrong stuff, though. Obviously you don't want to waste leisure time doing something that you don't enjoy.

This is an interesting read which is related to what you are talking about. He talks about how the internet and the easy access of information is changing how people's minds work.
