Tips on studying definitions? What is your process for remember words and their meanings?

I've recently started to read at a desk, rather that in my bed, so that I can take notes with pencil and paper. Before I was just reading with an e-reader and looking up the definitions with the kindle defining feature as I went along. But I wasn't able to retain jack-shit, but now I have about two-hundred words written down, what study method does /lit/ recommend for me?
