try the Lichtenberg quotation on this topic (re. eating)
or read Montaigne "on books and reading"

better still, cut back on the alcohol, give up the drugs, turn off the tv, concentrate when you read and start remembering things

I just believe the question to be good for discussion. Personally I do quite enjoy the influence works have upon my mental models of various subjects and phenomena. And of course, there is the pleasure of reading.

Holy fuck how often is this question going to be asked?

Even if you can’t recall passages word for word, or even remember major plot points, if you were engaged when you initially read the book it will have a subconscious affect on you. Your communication skills and focus will improve, you will become a better writer, you will get better on picking up on subtext in books and understanding interpretation more.

If you're gonna read philosophy, keep notes of important concepts.
If you're gonna read fiction or poetry, enjoy the experience, and take note of interesting/uncommon uses for certain literary devices.
