Well, I'm not really so partisan one way or the other but The Republic has been read as a thinly disguised 'treatise' on Education by MANY through history, which in some sense it must be, as it supposably purports to cobble up the ideal state (from the Athenian means at hand). It's a good book. I was obsessed with it in my late teens and early twenties and probably read it 5x. But it's been over a decade since I've really thought about it, over a thousand books intervene, and so I'd have to look at my notes to REALLY get some kind of handle on it again in all honesty. My thinking just isn't there (or with Plato or even Aristotle) at the moment. Wish I could be of more help.

Just noticed the Hayek thread on 'central planning' (contra). Isn't the Republic a proto-instance of just that? Could be an intetesting line to pursue if one's interests are more political than literary..
