Shameless self promotions allowed here? I have something I published on amazon, its free this week and figured why not.

Tao Lin does it. Usually there is a thread you can post it in like "post your writing" or something

It's a novela, 12k words broken into 4 parts. This is what I was instructed to do by others who had been published for years on amazon. I did not go into this without asking for advice by people far more veteran than myself.

Pretty you can clean up the URL as such;

https://www.amazon.com/dp/1980945160

That ought to work. I've self-published several books on Amazon, using two pseudonyms. Well, technically three, but I highly doubt anyone will ever bother with that third one. It was just a shot in the dark, an experiment, a failed one at that.

At least you did it.Getting over the first hump is hard. Most people talk about writing but never do.

This is my first self publish, my work has been published elsewhere under nom de plumes as well. I would never read one of them, the things people pay for are very click baity.

Alright, $6 for the paperback I can kind of understand even though I'm pretty sure you could have lowered it to $4.50 or $5, but paperback sales are EXCEEDINGLY rare so may as well try to make a decent bit of change for each sale. $3 for the ebook version though? For only 26 pages? No, just no, I understand the juicy 70% royalty you want to get but with it being that short in all likelihood you'll be lucky to get some sales at 99 cents with 35% royalty.

From other authors who sell on Amazon, and have, this is what I was told. I am going to listen to them over even myself.

The kicker? I did not like it and wanted to lower the price on the first week. Amazon doe NOT LET YOU do so. I will gladly screen shot it showing you.

The first book I self-published was also my longest one; over 80k words, and I recall initially setting it to $1.99 but then lowered it to $0.99. It's been over 1.5 years and I might have gotten perhaps 10 paperback sales, though what's cool is 5 of my novels have been bought in paperback form in Germany. Written in Canada, printed/read/enjoyed in Germany, that's a pretty wild thought. It was indeed enjoyed too, the guy even managed to contact me and we swapped quite a few emails.

I just found where I am able to lower the price. If you have used Amazon's UI....well you know how fun it is.

Ah, you figured it out, right on. Good move on making it a female protagonist by the way; there seems to be a pretty good demand for such books that have a 'girl power' element or at least focuses on a female character. Seems to me that most of the buying power for Amazon books comes from women.

You won't need the 'extended distribution' stuff, if I recall the name correctly. I set my book up for it, but nothing ever came of it. My best guess is it's for if your book really goes wild with popularity and thus is a good way for bookstores to buy it on the cheap but while also providing you with some royalties, albeit not much.

One of my main readers is from Australia, only buys the books in ebook form but that's fine, very cool guy, Likes to head out to the bush with his wife from time to time to shoot some black powder firearms and drink some rum. She prefers wine. They're getting themselves set up for retirement, I don't know why but the only readers I've touched bases with have been fellows in their 50s/60s, pretty much. Guys who are basically twice my age or more. Well, I consider myself a pretty down-to-earth, old-fashioned kind of guy, for the most part. I try to keep reason and logic in my writings, perhaps that's a bit old-school.

The fellow in Germany has also told me that he expects agents to be pounding on my door for the movie rights haha God love him, I try to stay modest and think "he's only saying that to be nice", but he DID buy those 5 books in paperback, basically my 5 most expensive books, which is... what... over $40 USD at least, probably more. That said, $40 for 5 paperback novels is pretty darn reasonable.

I am happy anyone is reading this right now. I got picked up by Paizo last year for some small stuff, but really I am in a rut. I was injured twice over in the past year, so writing is my fallback for something to just DO. I miss being able to work with my hands more often personally.

Congrats on the traditional publication, I've got a short story submitted to a traditional publisher who is working on a sort of compilation book with a bunch of different short stories in it, and also submitted a very small piece of writing for some sort of postcard contest. Those are basically my two first attempts at traditional publication, as for self-publishing I've been into that for over 1.5 years.

Sorry to hear about the injuries, but writing is certainly a nice passtime if nothing else. Hey, if it makes a bit of money for you as well, all the better. Do you understand KDP Select yet, or KENP?

By the by, take note of a few of the 1-star reviews I got on a few of my books that were relatively recent, very little actual context provided to explain the review. They were all done in an exceedingly short timeframe as well, so I suspect it was someone who downloaded a bunch of my books for free when I was on a free promotional campaign and for some reason was rather annoyed with me or just feeling mischievous so hit me with all those. I suspect they had come from here, in all honesty. Most any time I had books for free, I mention it on /lit/.

>>11186427
It's worth noting that the individual who wrote this might themself not intend on giving it a bad rating, perhaps just giving you a hard time, but someone may very well have that intent. I'm happy to say that my very first review, which I got in early March 2017 if memory serves, was a sparkling 5-star review that also included a bit of constructive criticism. Still found it good enough to stick with 5 stars. Nearly brought a tear to my eye.

I posted on 4chan, I have a feeling I may get some people who are bitter who review it without really reading it.

That's fine, all I can do is keep writing and hope the best for them. I've been in a great deal of pain in my life physically, and had to be on sever e OCD medications. It can make you angry at the world and lash out for no reason, even if you do not want to.

Fair enough, and thanks. It's only a matter of time before I get traditionally published, I sincerely believe that, but naturally I'd prefer it to be sooner rather than later. It'll come when it comes. I've written 6 novels, a couple novellas, and a fair few novelettes both for self-publishing and also for ghostwriting or custom erotica. Between March 2017 to March 2018 I made over $900, which if nothing else is a damn fine bit of supplementary income. The goal for 2018 is to make at least 4-figures, and I'm well on my way. I hope to be a full-time writer someday so admittedly I do pay a fair amount of attention to what I make. My goal is basically $10,000 USD a year, which is a pretty modest goal. Still, I can live off that. My best month was March 2018 when I made about $225, that was incredible.

Resids is where you can build off of something! Invest that into some decent div/yield stocks and your set lol!

I made more money writing click bait articles than I did my real job. The other thing that pays a ton? Doing manuals for people. No one enjoys writing and formatting instruction manuals.

Well that's odd; in the end Amazon WANTS people to buy books on their site so 5-star reviews shouldn't be questioned too much. I'm pretty sure the reviews are visible for both paperback and ebook. Nope, I can't see it on either. Well, I guess it'll just take a while for it to show up? Give it a few days. If a few days have already passed, something's fishy.

I had to learn about finances, when your put up in your house for a long period of time you feel the need to add value to your family. We have no kids, but I read up on how to manage our retirement better and our portfolio. It helps I have a brother with an Econ degree....but that aside reading up on it proved more valuable then anything.

The above link explains the later. Earlier you invest in "SAFE" long term stocks, the better off you will be. S&P 500 and other such index funds are the best bet...just remember that as time goes by.

12k words is a novelette as I recall, a novella is 17.5k to 39,999 words, and a novel is 40k+. Anything below 7.5k words is a short story. Anyhow, it probably depends on who you ask I suppose, but good luck to you as well. I hope your health improves.

I recall I got a temporary ban as well once for posting a link to my books, but there's been MANY times when I didn't get banned for it, so it's a bit hit-and-miss. I guess you got unlucky. Generally speaking I think there's a more lax view on things if you're offering books FOR FREE rather than ones that need to be bought, and also it probably helps if nobody reports you for it. Apparently 4chan has ads available for purchase for advertising, so obviously they'd rather people not be doing it for free.

I've got little doubt that he'll be glad to hear it, and hopefully he'll be happy to get some constructive criticism, though of course, outright praise would be welcome as well.

I'm the other guy who posted a link to my books, and I'm happy to say that someone in the last few hours bought one, so thanks whoever that was. Second book, written November 2016, barely long enough to be considered a novel, and in spite of that lovely 5-star review I got for it (the only review thus far) I'm still questioning if it's truly all that good. I ought to read it again sometime, but I think a part of me is afraid of succumbing to death-cringe. Time will tell, but I hear as more time passes you find yourself being more embarrassed of older works. By the time I'm 50 I'll probably want to burn everything I wrote now in my 20s.
