People do sometimes seem to hate it because I think it's much better to read V. before Gravity's Rainbow as many want to just jump right into the deep end, despite Gravity's Rainbow featuring many characters that are first introduced in V..

That's kind of the joke though. I was expecting some pretty gloomy, powerful existential stuff and crazy vanishing spectacles from the cover, but really all I got was a wheel spinning round and round and hilarious flat-earther logic in nonsensical "science". The book is literally a practical joke at the expense of everyone who indulges in the absurd as a "serious" art form, and I say that only to its credit.

Are his other books less prose heavy and convoluted than crying of lot 49? I ended up having to look up so many things all the time that it was tiresome and difficult to pay attention to anything happening in the book. I want to like him because many give the impression that he's some kind of God amongst authors, but how do I appreciate it better? I feel like I only get surface level deep. Are there any books by authors that can train me to appreciate his way of writing any better?
Should I try to read V.?

V. is an easier read than The Crying of Lot 49 in terms of language, but it is longer and the scope of the plot is larger.

Gravity's Rainbow is more difficult than either of them. Sometimes I feel that it's counterproductive to look everything up the first time you read a book and that it's more suited to do that on a second read through. Let the first read just be a ride.

Pynchon fan-boy here; inherent vice is an accessible work that is most indicative with what he was trying to do with his California trilogy—Vineland, 49, and IV. I mean that it’s the most complete, despite maybe 49 being the best of those three.
Understanding these themes helps readers unfamiliar with him to approach easier his more historical, longer works like GR and MD and AtD.
So, you should start with Inherent Vice. Also, find the Cambridge companion to Pynchon from a local library. It offers a lot of entry-level essays for each book, as well as for Pynchon himself to help readers get a sense of his oeuvre.
Hope this helped!

Nah dawg, The Road is a much better intro to McCarthy.

That would be much better if it was:
