I really liked the movie and wanted to read the book, but internet rewievs aren't really positive. Why is that?

The first one is definitely worth reading, you realise much more stuff than the Kubrick film actually suggests. I've been reading the 2nd and 3rd one lately, and while they're interesting cause they're really the continuation of the whole story, they are not as good...there are lots of boring chapters, exposition scenes and little subplots that don't seem to bring anything worth.
Now i'm reading the 4th and it almost feels like it should be read right after the first.
So it depends if you just want to skip some and get to the good stuff or if you want to read it all, which i would still recommend.

First three are fine, I read them as a kid and liked them. The last one (3001: The Final Odyssey) is terrible so don't bother with it.

They're good, but they veer into just being silly by the end of the series. I'd suggest reading the first one anyway and if you like the first one go ahead and finish the rest

If you like the books, the movie "2010: The Year We Made Contact" is a much more direct adaptation than Kubrick's (sublime) film.

The first one is really good. I never read the rest of them because apparently they're sequels to the movie rather than the book and I have no interest in watching the movie.
