Just read "A Clean. Well-Lighted Place" by Hemingway,
and I have one main question..
The older waiter had compassion for the drunk old man, but why? Is it because he understood where the drunk old man was coming from? Or is there something else i'm missing?

I seem to remember my prof talking about this one. Written shortly before Hemmingway committed suicide, aparently

IIRC The older waiter was empathetic with the man because he was essentially in the same boat. Nothing to live for

>he understood where the drunk old man was coming from

The young waiter just wanted to get off of work. He's from a younger generation and he doesn't give a shit about anyone but himself. The older waiter understands what it feels like to be the old man in the bar, and how it feels to just want one, simple thing out of his day.

yeah, the older you get, the more you can empathize with the shit old men go through
