Undergrad today is a joke designed to be a "fun experience" rather than rigorous study. Most people going for a typical B.S. or a B.A. program, even at Harvard, aren't going to be that bright.
If you want a true essential reading list, you're going to need to go back 80 years at least. Anything from today is going to be shit.

Look at the most majors most people go for; most pathetic, from social sciences, to modern humanities, to business administration. Even for the more intense fields, the core study is the minority of one's classes. In fact, nearly 30 something credit hours go toward gen eds alone in the USA!
The average college student puts less than 15 hours into study, going to class included, per week.

Their law students are among the best in the country and their post graduate education is extremely rigorous and accordingly is comprised of mostly bright people. Undergrad admissions are based on SAT / GPA and any fool can qualify for these if their parents prepare them enough. You are an imbecile to count undergrad morons as "bright". Please go back to www.reddit.com, you clearly lack the minimum IQ required for /lit/.

They are a scam by the US education system, to extend the duration of undergrad another year, to a total of four years, four fucking years.
I know the norm in Germany, UK, and Norway is a 3 year course of study for most undergrad programs.

I don't mean to be unnecessarily combative, but you're completely wrong and don't have any idea what you're talking about.

I'm a senior at Harvard, and the average quality of the undergraduates here is much higher than both the law school and b school students. I'll readily grant that the PhD students tend to be higher quality than the undergraduates, but it's tough to directly compare them because of the age/maturity gap. However, I certainly think the law/b-school students are lower quality. The Kennedy school is a joke and doesn't count.

Of course there's a sizable chunk of dumb kids here who are only in because of daddy money, but there's also a fair amount of savants and very high performers. Additionally, while most kids aren't well "educated" in the sense that they have a strong grasp of intellectual history/philosophy, you certainly can't argue that they're not intelligent (in terms of raw potential/ability)

TL;DR if you're gonna shit on the college (and there's a lot to shit on), at least do it right -- the law school students aren't that bright compared to us, just risk-averse as hell

SAT isn't an IQ, it's a poorly designed test that losely assesses verbal intelligence, reading comprehension and basic math abilities. The LSAT is more comparable to an IQ test.
Performance in highschool doesn't really mean much of anything. So what if you got an A in Ms. Susan's civics class, it means nothing. It could be that she just liked you, or that you're just good at doing homework which was the bulk of the weight in the class grade computation.
For you to think excelling in either of these things makes someone "bright" and worthy of admiration is pathetic. You're treating it as though some worthless undergrads are MD-PhDs.
