Dylan deserved the Oscar just for Jimmy Hendricks’s guitar solo on “There Must Be Some Kind of Way Out of Here Said the Joker to the King” alone.

I absolutely hate his music and saw one of his atrocious live performances so I've been reluctant to get into his lyrics.

Why is he considered an above average lyricist? Why him and not someone else?

It's close if you're allowed to count the strange four-legged, two-headed Lennonandmccartney beast. But if not, I don't see much competition.

His live performances have certainly been atrocious for many years, but you shouldn't be attending them expecting good ones. The only reason to go to a live Dylan concert in the past ten years is because of who he WAS, not who he IS.

I find his self-righteous tone very annoying but when it comes to sheer lyrical ability, I don't think there's anyone even close. (inb4 Leonard Cohen fans, I'm not going to fight you, so go shadow-box in the corner).

I think Cohen and Joni Mitchell are better pure lyricists but he's certainly the most important and impactful songwriter ever. It's almost foolish to compare others to him because he so singlehandedly established contemporary songwriting as a means for personal and artistic expression. I think a lot of people don't get that. Dylan is just Dylan and we'll never have another songwriter quite like him.

Mr Van Vliet had some talent and some originality but his body of work doesn't compare.

I can see how you would not like his singing (although I like it, personally), but his band is absolutely top tier and has been for decades.

He irritates me as a person and his lyrics never stood out to me. I thought the whole point was that they were down to Earth and folksy. All he did was strike while the iron was hot in the right place, at the right time and his (((fraternity))) connections did the rest.
