Can books have a dream like quality like german expressionist movies ?
If so what are some ?

>> No.11081977

Haruki Murakami's books are often described as 'dreamlike' because of how bizarre and nonsensical (in my eyes) his books are. Personally, I'm not a fan, he seems to be a very love him or hate him type of author. My roommate adores him.

Mishima, actually. Maybe some other Jap authors.

Yeah, that's the advice I wanted to avoid. While Murakami is dreamlike for sure, his books are, for the most part, nothing but dreams, they have little to hold them together and so they fall apart as any dream does.

Why not read expressionist literature? That has exactly the surrealism you're looking for. I recommend Döblin and Kafka, Meyrink too.

Most of Hawkes' books have that quality.

Urth of the New Sun felt more dream-like, particularly the first half where every other chapter ends with Sev getting knocked out or thrown into space.
