Is it profitable to self publish books and audiobooks using platforms like Amazon's Createspace? I know you have to build your own audience, but I'm wondering if writers generally find it a more profitable and fulfilling experience over working with publishers. For instance EmptyHero said on his stream tonight that Stephen King makes $0.10 per book sold whereas he makes almost $4 each.

If you have some sort of comptent marketing strategy it can be. If not you'll just write wacky shit no one reads like pic related.

>more profitable
Traditional publishing will pay you around $5k for an advance, which you may or may not (probably not) make money on top of that.

I'm reasonably sure you misheard 10%/book as $0.10/book.

Basically, it depends. I'd rather get a book published traditionally after input from an agent and editor. Other people prefer complete creative freedom.

Traditional publishers will still want you do to a bunch of marketing on your own.

Couldn't find a QTDDTOT thread (do you do them on /lit/?), but this is tangentially related.

Does anyone have any suggestions about cheap book printers?

Doesn't have to be great quality, think the Dover books that are reprinted public domain works, if you're familiar. That's basically what this book that I want to get printed is.

The book would be ~250 pages at about A5 page size, I'm wondering if a hundred copies could be printed for >=US$10/ea.

>not just taking public domain classics and selling a createspace version

People must be making money from it because you see loads of them for like every mildly popular classic out there, and they seem to actually be some of the best selling editions in some cases
