I've never read books by either of them or any game of thrones books. I thought this general would be more normie than the rest of /lit/ but it's mostly books written ages ago and then 4 or 5 of the more well known authors in each genre that get talked about. Doesn't anyone here read average tier books? My criteria is basically seeing a 200+ 4-5 star rating on amazon and then reading the summary to see if it catches my attention. Started reading again a few months ago and I've got 6 fantasy series waiting on new books.

>> No.11053817

It is more normie than /lit/, but if we only talked about the hip new series we'd just be reddit. Old and new are discussed here, but it's easier to talk about old stuff because there's tons more of it.

The problem is that anyone who reads new books doesn't even attempt to make recommendations or defend their tastes.

>read some Kindle book
>post image of derivative cover art
>Book IIII of the Elfsong Saga by Kathryn Ladee
>yo dis shit good
>looks like crap mate
>n-no

Maybe it was great but no one who posts here is capable of explaining why, which mostly just inclines me to believe that anyone who can stand to read new releases is functionally illiterate and just reads shit on Kindle that they accidentally downloaded while trying to buy waifu dolls on Amazon.

I've read a bunch of fantasy books, both newer and older, but nobody ever talks about them and my attempts to bring them up get ignored, so I mostly just lurk or chime in when somebody mentions an author or series I've read. I'm having to wait longer and longer between times when that happens though, as I think more and more fantasy readers abandon this general due to its overall shitty, stagnant attitude.

Well I just finished this 10 minutes ago. I think it's a bit more mature than the other fantasies I read. Basically elemental demons rise at night and most humans hide using flimsy symbols etched into things like houses called wards. The summary talks about a trio standing up to the demons but the 3 main characters don't even meet until the last couple chapters. It spans a decade or so following the characters in their teens to their late twenties. About to start book 2. Would recommend if looking for swords and demons. The magic part isn't your typical magic, just symbols that can be carved and painted on stuff.

>>11054246
The ending leaves you wanting for a bit more answers because it felt rushed.

The "power levels" between the characters feels incredibly off. Not much is explained but the overworld is cool. Jorg is an interesting sociopath character. People take the book too seriously or take the book to edgily.

I found it an entertaining read, but I was left disappointed with how things quickly wrapped up in the end.

>Hiley OIV is one of Ut’s most conscientious inhabitants, a man so afraid of losing his head (utpeople have very precarious necks) that a Bad Thought almost never enters his mind. But now his teenage daughter has fallen in love with Prussirian BBD—Ut’s most notorious outlaw—a man who has broken Mamacita’s cardinal rule: he makes music.

I enjoyed all of books 1, maybe the time line jump was a little much. Looks like you were right about the nosedive though. Started reading book 2 and it's a back story of the arab-like people which I don't really care about. Skipped ahead and didn't see anything about arlen. Went to amazon reviews and turns out books 2, 3, and 4 are all getting 2-3 stars and people complaining about pointless backstories and no plot movement. I got the same feeling just reading the first 2 chapters.

Based on the first book I was hoping for a cool adventure involving the trio fighting demons and uniting the humans. Guess the author shit the bed. Might still finish the series at a much slower pace. Time to find a new series though

Black Sun Rising, Red Rising and Deathstalker are all fundamentally fantasy stories but set in scifi universes. Book of the New Sun also straddles this gap but is a more challenging work.

also there's a punch of fantasy with post-apoc and/or scif elements i.e. A Land Fit For Heroes, Broken Empire.

Finally Red Sister and Grey Sister are fantasy stories but the world has outright scifi elements but they're not at the forefront yet and could be red herrings.

LitRPG is basically just americans trying to cash-in on the reincarnation isekai genre that's blazing hot in Japanese light novels right now. It's debatable whether SAO was the cause of the of that boost in popularity, as it was already taking over the Japanese market.

>>11058740
Yes, but .hack is entirely different, the only major similarity is "stuck in an MMO," and the rest of it is different.

In short, .hack tried to do something meaningful and tell a thought-provoking story (whether they succeeded is up to the viewer) while SAO was literally written by a Japanese teenager and is filled with cliches and pandering. The core of the story is well thought-out, but it is hardly developed and takes a backseat to the black and white characters and poorly set up drama.

You can do whatever you want, but remember that everyone reads for different reasons and everyone has a different shit-filter. As someone who has been reading since childhood, and editing since my upper teens, I've learned to pull apart good writing and bad writing. More than the story or the characters, I read for the writing itself. Not to see the the plot develop, but to see how they're developed and why the author made the choices he did.

Others read for escape; to immerse themselves in another world. To make friends and follow them through adventures. Others just want to read and pick up whatever is in reach, without much care for the writing or sometimes even its content.

Read what you want to read. Don't let others force their do or die mentality on you. If you're just reading for occasional entertainment, you don't need to read full novels. And you certainly don't need to read some of the more ostentatious things that people here often preach about.

it's amazing how they get away with making minor variations of the same concepts and story and still sell well.

14-20 year old japanse male is transported to other world while being extremely powerful/having a special ability that lets them coast by without any personal effort. There is a goddess/summoning ritual that transports them, and the world is almost always the same, with big tiddy elves that are enslaved often, "beastmen" that conveniently look human enough to sexualize, and slavery that is always very bad except the protagonist has a few slaves but its okay because he freed them from worse masters or some shit. The rest of the world seems like it was taken from an old RPG, rather than anything resembling medieval europe, and there are no gray areas, just good and bad.

Fuck i hate those things

Sometimes I wish I could, since there's occasionally good stories in the trash people write, but It's like I'm being offered to eat a delicious sandwich, and to eat the sandwich, I'm required to stand inside a room filled with putrid air piped in 24/7. Some rooms smell worse than others, some better, but at some point you begin to question if the sandwich is really worth it. You'll also come to realize that the "Free" rooms are usually the smelliest. It's hard to enjoy the core of the book when everything surrounding it repulses me.

It's just wish fulfillment. They're transported from the real world so the person reading them can imagine the same being done to themselves. They're immediately accosted by attractive women, the exact opposite of what happens in real life. They're made out to be main characters and lionized by everyone around them, unlike their unremarkable selves. They're given power, something of which they likely have none, and struggle against distinct opposition, which allows them to revel in their own perceived superiority and fight something obvious as opposed to the nebulous and stressful, yet unremarkable difficulties they face in life. It's not hard to see why people like it. It's like all the escapism provided by sci-fi and fantasy, distilled to their essence, but losing all complexity and flavor in the process. It's like taking all the sugar out of a pound-cake and serving that instead. I'm sure some gluttonous fucks are fine with eating spoonfuls of raw sugar for their daily rush, but some people require a bit more.

The isekai genre in general is plagued by the same thing that plagues all young adult literature and twenty-something authors, and that's the horrible incest of fiction -- people who have grown up only exposed to video games, anime, and pop-fiction like Harry Potter, then inspired, fancy themselves an author and attempt to write without reading any of the classics or having experienced anything truly profound in their lives. No matter how original they think they are -- and certainly most don't even try -- they cannot help but channel the pablum they've consumed.

As long as you tick the correct boxes and tickle the right fancies, you're all set. Have you ever imagined yourself the head of a harem of catgirls? Write an isekai about it. Ever wanted supreme power that would make the school bully Cockku-kun kneel at your feet? Write an Isekai about it. Ever wanted to feel like your life actually mattered? Write an isekai about it.
It's a very simple concept, but quite potent. It's almost disgusting.

The nearest I can think is Robert Silverberg's Lord Valentine's Castle, a fantasy that was deliberately written in a happy and picturesque tone. No gritty anti-heroes or grimdarkness, just an exiled prince traveling through a big world and making friends while juggling in a traveling circus. It's the sort of book where difficulties are overcome by the amiability of the protagonist rather than by swordfights. Any nascent appearance of gloom or tension dissipates with a good-natured chuckle of the protag among his gang in a cheesy TV or anime sort of way.

It's not as interesting or exciting as his other books but that is sort of the point.

This, I don't know why I still skim this general to be honest, almost completely worthless for recommendations. Sci-fi and fantasy especially have a significant division between people who read them for the setting and ideas and people who lean more towards characters and plot, and then within those there's various relevant details you might care about when forming an opinion on what to read next. Think the one time I saw someone give an actually detailed review they got accused of "blogging", really activates your almonds.

Is pic related considered sci-fi? If so, can we please discuss this book?

I haven't finished it, and it's already one of my favorite books. It's not an easy read at all, but it can be extremely engaging at times, even though some passages need to be re-read at least a couple times to be actually understood. In many places it actually gives me a very Book of the New Sun vibe (there's even a few passages in which the narrator explains that all the high-tech stuff in Eumeswil was actually salvaged from the catacombs beneath the city, much like the "miners" of Urth are actually digging to find ancient tech in buried cities) - and I love all the historical discussion that goes on in the novel, it's the only sci-fi novel that's set in the future but spends a lot of time reflecting on the past

How do you learn to write fiction properly? Obviously practice and reading will help, but is there anything more to it? Good prose makes a big difference, just compare ASOIAF and LOTR, Tolkien is many levels above GRRM as a writer and it shows.

I have strong opinions on the subject.
Firstly, there is a base skill level. Some people have a mindset that is inherently better suited to writing (people with more empathy etc) so they will advance much faster than others. Reading as a child gives people a huge advantage, especially if it's more advanced than short novella-type works.

But practice can outweigh any of those advantages. The real kicker, imo is that many people make the writing take a backseat to the story/plot. As self-published works get more attention and notoriety, the audience of readers is also shifting. People are reading books to read a movie, things are more formulaic and fast-paced and easy to absorb.

Writers aren't finding their voice, usually because they're not reading. The mind is like a sponge, and reading is key to honing one's skill. It should influence you enough that you find yourself wanting to write like the authors you're reading, and you should try writing chapters, maybe even short stories, using their tone, trying to recreate the feeling they invoked in you. While doing so, you subconsciously are finding what works for you and what doesn't.

tl;dr, no, some people are naturally better, but reading and writing are what really matter

also i can't stand Tolkien, but i do agree he's leagues above GRRM and Weeks and the like

Anybody got words about Seabury Quinn? I ran across a collection of his stuff on Amazon and the blurb intrigued me.
>Today the names of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, August Derleth, and Clark Ashton Smith, all regular contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the first half of the twentieth century, are recognizable even to casual readers of the bizarre and fantastic. And yet despite being more popular than them all during the golden era of genre pulp fiction, there is another author whose name and work have fallen into obscurity: Seabury Quinn.

>Quinn’s short stories were featured in well more than half of Weird Tales’s original publication run. His most famous character, the supernatural French detective Dr. Jules de Grandin, investigated cases involving monsters, devil worshippers, serial killers, and spirits from beyond the grave, often set in the small town of Harrisonville, New Jersey. In de Grandin there are familiar shades of both Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, and alongside his assistant, Dr. Samuel Trowbridge, de Grandin’s knack for solving mysteries—and his outbursts of peculiar French-isms (grand Dieu!)—captivated readers for nearly three decades.

I basically took 6 months of my life last year and read all the Horus Heresy books in a row and I dont regret it, good parts are really good, and if you like the setting you'll likely enjoy most of them. I would 100% say that its the best out of extended sci fi universes that feature this many books (star trek, star wars for example).

There are a few weak ones, I especially didnt like any of the anthology books for example, but the themes are for the most part good and you end up really caring for a lot of characters in the series, and every instance of betrayal is deeply felt.

All the battle porn kinda blends with each other though, so whenever it comes to actual battles I would just read at 2x speed.

And, I actually enjoyed Horus Heresy over Eisenhorn, felt the plot on Eisenhorn was all over the place, and much prefer HH Abnett over that. Gaunt's Ghosts is great though too.
