Honestly, is this worth reading? I've read and re-read The Hobbit and LOtR so I think I'm ready, but is it worth reading?

>> No.1104683

It depends on you. I enjoyed it but a lot of people don't. If you're interested in the lore but find the actual reading of the Silmarillion to be too much of a chore then the Wikipedia page on Tolkeins universe is pretty interesting.

But I say give it a go.

I enjoyed it more than lotr.

I really enjoyed it

I liked the part in the Silmarillion where Feanor insults and then shuts the door on Melkor. I mean, how big were his balls?

Also: The Doom of the Noldor. pg 99 paperback. Just try to read it in context and not consider it genius, I dare you.

It cut down on the 'jolly old England, chaps!" aura that hung around LOTR and caused the movies to be better, but it's still a bit of a chore to read.

It was okay.

He chanted a song of wizardry,
Of piercing, opening, of treachery,
Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
Then sudden Felagund there swaying
Sang in answer a song of staying,
Resisting, battling against power,
Of secrets kept, strength like a tower,
And trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
Of changing and of shifting shape
Of snares eluded, broken traps,
The prison opening, the chain that snaps.
Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
And all the magic and might he brought
Of Elvenesse into his words.
Softly in the gloom they heard the birds
Singing afar in Nargothrond,
The sighing of the Sea beyond,
Beyond the western world, on sand,
On sand of pearls in Elvenland.
Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing
In Valinor, the red blood flowing
Beside the Sea, where the Noldor slew
The Foamriders, and stealing drew
Their white ships with their white sails
From lamplit havens. The wind wails,
The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
The captives sad in Angband mourn.
Thunder rumbles, the fires burn ---
And Finrod fell before the throne.

Where I am getting at is that the Silmarilion is a must-read for a Tolkien fan. Now, that new book, The Children of Húrin, that was a bit too much for me.

More gay singing and overly explained detail about shit no one really cares about and doesn't exist. Horseshit.

>> No.1105771

Its pretty dry (think history book of mythology), but if you're really into Tolkien you'll like it.
I am and I did.

U mad? The Children of Húrin is awesome, and the story of Turin is one of the best parts of the Silmarillion.

>> No.1105819

I think anyone who gets to the point where they seriously consider reading The Silmarillion should just go ahead and give it a try. (It's kind of like anal sex in that regard.) I mean, if you're seriously considering it, then that means that you enjoyed LOTR and The Hobbit, you're interested in the mythos, and you want to tackle some new & more advanced material.

DO IT FRESHMAN.

I read all of it my Freshman year in high school. Then whenever someone wanted to sound smart by claiming to have read all the Harry Potters I just rolled my eyes.
