>cameras in every home looking for unorthodoxy 24/7, when what is orthodox is subject to change randomly
>children, neighbors and workmates looking to catch you out
>mandatory group leisure activities with these people
>bombs in the streets
>scarcity of luxury goods (butter, jam, tobacco, coffee, tea) except garlic infused gin
>scarcity of many non luxuries (razor blades)
>no sex or dating, women are brainwashed into celibacy

Still sound bad desu. The passage about the general shabbiness of daily life felt well observed. What I didn't enjoy was the info-dump book extract in the second half of the book. Overall his prose is pleasingly lucid.

You obviously haven't actually read 1984. In it the middle class are watched 24/7 and if you show even a vague hint of resistance they'll either re-educate you or kill you. Hell, if you show even a vague hint of intelligence they'll kill you. Syme was 100% devoted to Big Brother but he ended up getting killed by the government because he was smarter than the average Joe.
