About to read Moby-Dick for college. Prep me on it, please, I know it's going to be a long read.

>> No.1104419

Why read it when you can do it for yourself!

Just kill the bastards when you get close enough.

Beginning is cool
Middle is grueling
End is awesome

Overall worthwhile book.

OP here. >>1104418

Besides that guy ^, does anyone else have any opinions about this book? Care to explain?

>> No.1104472

lots of ridiculously long and pointless exposition about the anatomy of whales and how to go about hunting them

funny part is that it's like 90% wrong

I give it 2 and a half library cards.

>> No.1104503

It's probably the greatest English Language novel. If you want to really appreciated it though, get the Norton Critical Edition.

>> No.1104510

Can't say I've read it, but I can tell you that Melville is a fantastic writer.

>> No.1104897

Longest book in history.

it's more whatthefuckamireading.jpg worthy than /b/ most of the time.

Read Moby Dick at the age of 13.

Spent a lot of time thinking "what am I reading?" but that wasn't a bad thing per se.

Ahab was funny.

I actually agree with that guy. The beginning, when they're on land still, is pretty good and interesting. Once they go out to sea, and every other chapter is about whales (as in, whale anatomy, whale history, how whales do X, etc.), it gets REALLY tedious. REALLY GOD DAMN TEDIOUS.

But the finale is awesome.

>> No.1105099

It's... dense. That's the best word I can think of to describe it.

It is enjoyable but it is laborious read. It will take effort.

It's great. College will probably ruin it for you, though. Please beware, they have no clue what exactly is so good about Moby Dick. All they care is how to impress ugly girls with their knowledge of book's recursive autoanalisys, which should've been left entirely out.
