11033629 No.11033629 [Reply] [Original]

I was thinking about making a web game similar to pic related, only using philosophers instead of scientists. Can I get any recommendations on who to include, so I can compile a list? Bonus points if you want to include some unique moves for them.

Do it. Nietzsche (neetch) must be included.

this pic was tailor-made for those pre-fight versus screens you always see after character selection.

among other moves he should be able to throw a poodle at you.

Well, on that note, Nietzsche needs to have some kind of special move that sends a stampede of horses at you.

Kierkegaard should have a Knight of Faith form. It would be cool if you could record 1 or 2 quotes from each philosopher and have it play when they finish the opponent, at the beginning of the round, or during special attacks.

nietzsche is going to be one of the most popular characters for sure. he's perfect for an anime-inspired fighting game and can have an awesome flashy style. definitely a Superman punch should be in there somewhere.

laozi seems like he would be a good fit; you need one wily old kung-fu guy. maybe let him project a big dragon shadow that bites you or something. his post-fight trash talk would be fun too, those sequences where you see the other guy's face all busted up and get to ironically quote from your own book.

i can definitely imagine a 16-bit marx raising his hands and then a gigantic legion of guys swarms his opponent. or maybe an enormous unblockable hammer and sickle falls from the ceiling and crushes you.

Hey everybody, I just wanted to clarify a few things, post some replies and the current roster.

1) I intend for everyone to have two special attacks. This game is meant to be humorous, so some modern "philosophers" could be funny as unshockable, but there defiantly is a boundary.

2)
>>11033645
Obviously.
>>11033654
I like that.
>>11033681
I appreciate your contribution. I will see what I can do about imagery.
>>11033689
Both ideas sound good to me. From now on if people want to post some of their favorite quotes with the philosophers I could work with that.
>>11033693
Could just be a special move, yes? Otherwise sounds interesting.
>>11033704
I was thinking of adding Harris and Peterson as some of the more funny unshockables. Molyneux and Sargon seem a bit extreme.
>>11033718
I like the Laozi suggestion. I had already thought of Marx, but I think something with a hammer and scythe would be funny.
>>11033741
I'll do my best, but if I am honest I do not know a lot about either. Might take some reading before I can give an actual comment on this.
>>11033777
I was thinking a sort of "drain" effect for Marx's other power, as an averaging might be a little over powered.

3) The current roster. I split it into three groups, one in which I have both moves developed, one in which one is made up, and one if neither. Within the groups characters are in no particular order.

Two powers made:
>Plato
>Peterson
>Marx

One made:
>Sun Tzu
>Laozi
>Nietzsche

No moves made:
>Stirner
>Heidegger
>Plato
>Descartes
>Zizek
>Frank Zappa
>piccolo
>Machiavelli
>Hobbes
>Kierkegaard
>Zeno of Elea
>Epictetus
>Marcus Aurelius
>St Augustine
>Hegel
>Aristotle

Let me know if I missed anyone, or anyone else you want to add. I will update again soon.

You need one existentialist, I suggest Camus, Sartre, or de Beauvoir. I Iike the suggestion to have Camus be a gun fighter, tie it in to the Stranger.
No Wittgenstein is a mistake, there's all sorts of things you could do with him.
You need at least one post-modernist, I suggest Foucault because you could work in discipline and punish-type shenanigans into his skill set.

Antiochus (based on the have nice life album, deathconsciousness) should be an unlockable character. he might be a fictional philosopher, but his moves can be insane. he can have a move where he forces his enemies to give damage to themselves, a move where he summons hooded assassins to attack the opponent, and an ultimate ability where he deals damage based on the enemy's missing HP. i know there should be more adjustments and balancing to be made but i think the character has lot of potential. he can be a boss somewhere in the campaign mode, and when you beat him, you can play as him.

Epicurus' ability should be the swerve, it lets him easily dodge attacks. His superpower is to be able to withdraw from battle into a garden where H.P. gets automatically restored.

Sextus Empiricus' special move is to clone himself (create an NPC decoy) so that the opponent is confused and doesn't know who to attack. His super move is to summon a fast moving cart from offscreen that can run an opponent over.

Zeno of Elea's paradoxes freeze an opponent in place.

Diogenes the Cynic can either poop/masturbate on the opponent, he can also transform into a dog with a powerful bite.

Stoics should all share the ability to become temporarily invulnerable, but have their own distinctive powers:
Chrysippus can attack with an unlimited number of heavy scrolls.
Epictetus' weapon is a chain, his special move is to bind the opponent's legs.
Marcus Aurelius' unbeatable super move is to summon a Roman legion.

Boethius' special moves are to summon the Wheel of Fortune that bounces around the stage inflicting damage at random, and to imprison his opponents.

I envision three tiers of special moves, and then an ultimate, so I'll break it down as such
>tier 1: delivers a shot from his revolver that can deliver damage from a distance, fairly spammable low cost but low impact special move
>tier 2: delivers five shots in quick succession up close, ineffective at range but significant when up close, with a fair amount of time to cool down
>tier 3: inflicts a plague on the opponent for a short time that saps their health and impedes their mobility, highly effective but on a long cooldown

Tonight's updates:
No current updates to the roster. I will try to get on actual development as soon as I can. For the demo version I am thinking the roster will be:
>Plato
>Peterson
>Marx
>Laozi
I did run into another game online similar to my idea called "Filosofight" I believe, which discouraged me a bit. I have not decided if I actually want to do this exactly or change it to something else. Maybe more of a classic rpg theme? Let me know opinions.

>>11036796
Must have been a different anon. I honestly would not have done this if I knew it was discussed before. As mentioned, the fact that Filosofight exists is discouraging to me.
>>11036862
Fair enough, although I am mainly looking for people with profoundly unique methods of thought. He was a great thinker, but I am not entirely convinced he is the best fit. So I suppose here is my verdict on the issue: if I have to make the art for him, it will take too long. If someone else wants to I will gladly implement him.
>>11036908
The game is in Spanish. As far as I know there is no English version available.

You earned all three of these. I am all but on my knees here for an artist if you cannot tell. I need some art to work with, and I am not talented in that regard.
>>11039824
You solved the problem mate.

Again a quick reminder that any supporting materials made can be submitted for use. All of this, beyond improving quality will also speed development. Please submit Sprite sheets, backgrounds, or music. Easiest way for me to use these would likely be if they are shared publicly, and then a link to them is posted as a comment in the doc.

computer games are large complicated pieces of software. even if this is just a browser-based game, you'll need a professional dev or computing student working on it as a hobby to produce a basic build. the source code for that build then needs to be put on GitHub/Lab so others can improve it. a half-good version will take 6 months at least.

Immanuel Kant
Special:
Categorical imperative attack: All players control all of the characters for a certain amount of time, making every move univerzialised.

Special 2:
Kants noumenal form.
All damaged of Kant is fenemonal and Kant opens a rift into the noumenal. There he transforms into the immortal, autonomous will that is perfectly moral with eternal happiness granted by god. One shots every other player for a short amount of time.

What is the control scheme?
I don't see anything in the thread so far about this and that might be why there are some characters without moves.
I'm familiar with mortal kombat style controls, with button combinations that need to be memorized to do an array of special moves and there's super smash brother's style with a direction plus the a or b buttons do different moves. I'm sure there's at least one more layout for fightting games but I don't know it.

Updates:
I have started learning Godot for the project, but I have not been able to make anything yet. Now it is more about learning a new skill than purely time restraints, though. That being said, is someone has material on the subject, please link it.
The /g/ thread fell into the archive a little while ago. It is not really that big of a deal, though. I believe any of the anons over at /g/ that were genuinely interested are already following the project. That being said, when we get the first demo out I will probably post something on a few different boards to see if we can get any more backing. I think people will be more willing if they are convinced this is going somewhere, and they will likely receive it on such boards as /v/ and /mu/. The plan then goes as follows for me:
>Learn Godot
>Create a demo, ignoring art and music
>Post it, essentially as a rough draft.
>Take in any advice I can from developers in order to set up specific tasks on Github. Devs can work out these while we recruit artists and musicians.
>Gradually replace art and music.
>Gradually expand fighter roster, as well as arena roster.
>Publish game online
>People can still contribute directly to Github if they wish.

That all being said, I do have a task for the "idea people" if I may: we need to flesh out existing ideas more than we need new ones. If you could contribute some quotes for the philosophers, imagery from online that is similar to backgrounds, or even ideas as far as specific game mechanics please do not hesitate. At this point these types of contributions are more valuable than new philosophers that may never see the light of day. (If nobody fleshes them out!)

C fag here.
There are two solutions :
1- you go full streetfighter / tekken / MK like style and you can have character of this size >>11049967 (maybe it's a bit too big ? I'd say around 200px height and 100px width when standing)
2-you go more smash bros style, so a smaller one I'd guess to display more stuff in the screen to be defined

Other way would be to play a fighting game and see what scale they are using and see what you prefer (smaller or bigger compared to them)

You're right. I tested it out a bit. Pic related is the newer version, dimensions 512x288, then stretched to 1024x593. I found this fits well, and looks good against our current character models.

Noted.

Thank you. Will give it a watch and note takeaways in the doc.

Socrates is included in one of Plato's move, plus he is sort of set apart from the others in a way. Including him feels a bit odd.

Thanks mate! I think the discord invite is expired, though. I will see if I can get an update for that.

I was actually going to suggest a "Leap of Faith" move — the true Knight of Faith looks like a tax collector, and uses humor as his incognito.

If everyone has a distance attack, you can make the cooldown vary with each character and make the dmg vary accordingly, diogenes could throw his lantern and it would give burning dmg but have a long cooldown, camus gun wouldn’t hurt much but have a short cooldown, etc...

>> No.11058181

>>11058174
Diogenes could also have a dog attack, he always has dog next to him and the attack has the dog bite the guy and not let go, like a grab.

Are the philosophers going to have attributes or buffs? It would be cool if certain philosophers were stronger in attack and defense or had higher speed or health. Like for example I imagine Nietzsche having a strong attack but lower health. Some flavor text on the character selection would be good too, for example:

Nietzsche:
Will to Power:
+15% damage
Dionysian Spirit:
+30% damage, -15% health

Maybe it's possible for the player to select one of these buffs before fighting for balance reasons. Like in this case, they can choose either Will to Power for a slight damage boost without drawbacks or Dionysian Spirit for a big damage boost with a decrease in health. Sorry if I'm muddling this thread further, I imagine that implementing everything anons have said so far is already going to be difficult.

If you end up implementing jesus you can put this picture for defeat with aline about being forsaken, and use the faceapp smile for some uncanny valley type affect and have some smug line about forgiving him.

I already thought about something like this. Each philosopher would follow their ideas and thus benefits from it.
>Marx : every 5 seconds the next hit of each player will deal the same damages
>Jesus : once dead, you rez for 5 seconds (with low amount of life).

Modifying health amount, damages, etc. I'm not a big fan, but it can always be tested

If plato has an ultra it’d be cool for it to be like captain falcon’s final smash, he hits his ennemy and the guy is disoriented and looks around realizes he’s in plato’s cave and his leg is chained, he sees plato’s shadow coming at him on the wall and plato does an elbow drop on his neck from behind

That does sound a lot better and makes playing every character more dynamic, wouldn't it be harder for you to implement though? I don't know about coding except some basic text games I wrote in high school though.

>> No.11058293

more dynamic and more unique I guess.
Nothing is actually "hard", you just have to get the hand dirty and keep going on.

to add on this, my main concern is that no designer show off to help us doing it. We would end with a game engine for a fighting game but without any graphism.

Balancing will prove a bit difficult, yes, but it only really needs to be done once we have a game. It is not very useful to talk about specifics such as this so early.
>>11058252
It would take some time but I do not think it would be that difficult. Really depends on the attribute, though.
>>11058293
Exactly
>>11058297
The lack of designers really is our greatest weakness here. A lot of good ideas we have received are not very likely due to this alone.
>>11058324
I would rather avoid religious figures, at least in the base game. People like Jesus, Muhammad, and Siddhartha are sort of in a separate group from philosophers. Maybe in some "dlc".
>>11059227
Thanks for that.

I finally made so you could just load whatever spritesheet you gave it as long as you have a config file that explain your spritsheet.
vid related, I added more moves to the character. It was a bit longer than expected cause I had to figure out one or two things. Other moves will be easier to add I guess.
