Post your favorite publishers.

Penguin Classics, the covers on the paperbacks look so clean.

Heron books from the 60s are pretty good.
They all have the patrician old book smell and look nice if they're in good condition.

I really love New York Book Reviews and Pushkin Press. Never been disappointed with anything I've read from either of them.

Penguin has the shittiest book quality I've seen. My copy of The Nature of the Universe is in shit condition after reading it once even though it is only 250 pages, it's such a piece of shit that when I tried to remove the shipper's barcode it tore part of the cover off. I have 20+ year old used books that are 600+ pages long that have held up better.
0/10 will not but again

I don't like most penguin shit. Why would you want your books to all look like they're part of a set? Terrible aesthetic. You want your bookshelf to be a chaotic mix of old and new, worn and pristine, paper and hardback etc.

Suhrkamp's designs aren't very appealing, but also not particularly offensive to the eye.
Reclam has cheap printing, but what do you expect?
Fischer puts out some nice stuff, but also, especially with contemporary books, some horrid meant-to-be-catchy junk. The same can be said of DTV though.
Same thing goes for BTB.
Anaconda isn't too bad in terms of design, but has those horrible glossy hardbacks.
Herder seems to be a real offender when it comes to design.
What others were you thinking of?

reclam is great though because, if it's a smaller one, you can wonderfully put it in any pocket you want and just whip out when you have time. Just got my last Kafka short story collection for exactly that purpose.

Actually, yeh, I just opened the two I've got and the printing in one of them (the Vintage Classics edition of Brothers K) is worse than I remembered. The print is perfectly fine in my copy of Homo Deus, though.
I think what I like most, though, is the spine. It's, to me, the perfect balance of not-too-stiff, not-too-soft. I personally hate paperbacks that either flop around everywhere like a wet paper towel, or feel like they're going to snap in half when you open them.

Agree with everything you said, just want to add 2 things:

BTB is the most consistent as far as the quality of covers go. They have the best Saramago covers of any language.

Aufbau Verlag is not as well known, but their Dostoevskij covers are fucking Kino. Most of their other covers are as well.

My favorite publisher is Library of America, hands down, though of course they're limited to only American writers.

Norton Critical Editions have great supplementary stuff, if you like that. Penguin Classics sometimes does too.

But as far as cover design goes, my favorite will always be the Signet Classics covers from the 70s.
