this reminded me of worse horrors. i tried to get the third policeman as a present for a friend from a local bookshop once. the lady on the counter had no clue, so she told me she'd "go get joe, he knows these things". she then proceeded to open a bookcase in the wall to reveal a small room from which joe appeared eating his afternoon snack and informed me they didn't have it but he could "make inquiries next door".
not sure if it counts as a near death experience but i felt like flann o'brien was personally fucking with me. left as fast as i could without the book or asking the place next door.
