books whose main characters are teenagers but not young adult? i guess something like pic related, almost transparent blue, maybe even less than zero but it doesn't have to be as edgy. not catcher in the rhye (already read it but its also too milquetoast for my taste) i'm also hoping for more of a suburban setting, ideally between the 1950s-1990s.

probably overused but The Outsiders comes to mind first.

is there anything to be gained from reading that? i always thought it was more of an after school special than a work of literature.

Of all the books the school picked for us to read, this is the one I'm shocked and glad made it.
It is very much written for a high school audience but the message of "stay gold Ponyboy" very much resonated with me.
You live your life for yourself and those you care about no matter how tough it seems. We're not all born "Soc" so life may seem more difficult to us but in the end what truly matters is that we are able to overcome and how that makes us an individual.
Even Dick and Jane is literature; if someone hasn't learned how to read by 30 you would still start the same as you would a child.
The Outsiders is your plea incarnate.

My apologies for not using spoilers for the quote

When i was young and in school for some reason they read a bunch of outdoors type of shit like where the red fern grows and hatchet. Those both have young people in it. And this was a bit before harry potter appeared to ruin everything and everything had to be about a young teen fighting da man
