Why is Nihilism so often associated with fedora wearing beta males?

Is it because they cling to it in the hope it will make they come across as intelligent or edgey enough to attract girls?


I relate to it somewhat myself but definitely not wholeheartedly. Why is the difference between relating to someone like Rust Cohle from True Detective and being a neckbeard beta not elaborated upon?

I can't wrap my head around why the two are so synonymous nowadays. Thoughts? Or is it all just a dumb meme...
