Prayer is an inferior form of meditation.

Zen Buddhists practice zazen, to see the truth clearly, rather than begging a god for things. Taoists did something similar, but the Taoists tried to be sensitive to the "truth," or the "Tao," a binding thing they saw running through everything... sort of just reality. The Quakers actually do pretty much the same thing - they sit in silence, listening for God's guidance. This seems just like Taoists trying to be sensitive to the Tao.

According to brain scans on praying Catholics, those in deep prayer enter the same patterns as meditating Buddhist monks, leading me to believe that they're not doing that superficial wishing, but rather using their prayers as a focus for a type of meditation.

Bektashi Sufi Muslims do whirling dervishes to be fully in the moment, which seems a lot like zazen.

So meditate. In a way, every tradition is already doing it.
