Philip K Dick
if you disagree, but like Bolano then you should know that Bolano wrote "Dick is one of the ten best American writers of the twentieth century, which is saying a lot. Dick was a kind of Kafka steeped in LSD and rage". - From Bolano's between parentheses

I don't know what is the general consensus around here because I haven't been in many sci-fi threads but a lot of classic sci-fi is /lit/ worthy. In fact it's properly called "speculative fiction" and not sci-fi.

I mean, you can classify anything. The difference between 'literary fiction' and genre is that in most cases it's been written specifically to conform to a genre to be more easily marketed and commercially palpable.

>> No.10982273

>>10982213
Well, most so called "genre books" rely on a certain gimmick as a part of their premise.
When a certain gimmick gets popular a lot of people start copying it without trying to develop it any further than simply constructing a basic plot-driven narrative around it.

Crime: Graham Greene, maybe Chandler and Le Carre

Romance: dunno, but it seems to me lots of legitimately literary works heavily feature romance so maybe this is truly the most patrician genre

"graphic novel" is just the name of a publishing format. it's a comic book published in a big volume. the last time people used the term in the pretentious sense you're complaining about was the 90s.

a novel for and by people who are scared to be taken seriously. if you write something critical about a novel and the fans respond with things like "it's just [name of genre] dude" and "stop taking it so seriously it's just dumb fun" then you know you're dealing with genre fiction.
