Regardless of what all the pseuds here pretend to be the case, you won’t really understand it completely on the first reading.

I’m glad someone said it because I’m struggling to follow it 120 pages in. Any advice for stronger discernment or just read it a few times and pick up more?

I’ve read BGE and Genealogy. If I hadn’t read those I really would have no clue at all what was happening.

Peaks too early, that book. Best quote is in the first chapter after the prologue. (Don't tell me I didn't read enough of it, I reached the Seven Seals)

>What is the great dragon which the spirit is no longer inclined to call Lord and God? "Thou shalt," is what the great dragon is called. But the spirit of the lion says, "I will."

If you're reading it in German: One of the finest pieces of literature produced in the language, be sure to have a pretty solid familiarity with his work beforehand. It has basically all of his thought condensed into one book.

If you're reading it in translation: Garbage, just read BGE/GM instead. He wrote those books as the brainlet's companion to Zarathustra when one of his like 20 readers told him that Zarathustra was great but he didn't get all of it.

Zarathustra and BGE are pretty similar, I listened to the former on audiotape in the car so I didn't get close to the text, towards the end it gets pretty depressing imo. I'd say think of all the characters as separate faculties within Nietzsche himself, all of them singular potentialities composing of the higher unity (Nietzsches' soul)

I don't get the part about the higher men worshipping the ass. Why was he so happy about it?

Nietzsche drank urine shortly before his death.

Finished it this week and I certainly struggled through parts. I had never read anything by him, so I tried to supplement it with annotations but I still need to give it another read. Going to try out BGE next.
