why do people recommend this shit? is it a joke? is it the translation? is there another work that i should read?

Who the hell told you to read it? It's not even great by Pushkin standards. He is foremost a poet, there are dozens of russian writers who have way better prose.

i've had people irl tell me to read it and i've seen people on here hold up pushkin as one of the great russian authors, picked it up after i read confession by tolstoy
