okay let me explain

the book has some nice quotable lines like "a man who stands on his tip toes will never stand firm" (arrogance bad) but these metaphors are pretty shallow most of the time and have no legs to stand on

the other thing is, equating things to nature is a terrible way to make a point. you can't just say that rulers should act like rivers because rivers do this or that. it's not even a naturalistic fallacy to do this, it's just nonsensical.

finally the idea that doing nothing and letting things be is useful only in keeping cool, but in real life, try "doing nothing" when you have rent to pay and don;t wanna die of boredom

Cause Fucking Tao Te Ching isnt about arguing meaningless language games like western philosophy. It’s wisdom. The aphorism you quoted isn’t about not being arrogant or whatever specific thing you might come up with. It’s a universal lesson. It’s something that will always turn out to be right regardless of any situation. It’s something that you’ll find to be true in life, something to live by, not academic gymnastic trying to prove to you that “we’re just brains in a vat bro”. It’s observation of the order of things. The book never makes an argument, because it doesnt require it. It’s all sharp observations that will always be true.

Nah. I'd say it's an aesthetic and mentality, that reading and contemplating upon allows you to internalise. It's not really wisdom because it doesn't fit the whole of its definition, only a component and in a different way, as though the component it fills was a mere coincidence, a side-product. That's why I called it an aesthetic, more than knowledge or wisdom, that's what it is. It's a certain method of conveying and hammering down a desired way of thinking. Which is why it requires practice on the reader's part, not just a simple reading. It doesn't supersede or compete with other forms of literature and philosophy. It is its own. Much of Eastern philosophy does a similar thing and all of it requires practice, rather than simple reading and thinking as in the case of Western philosophy. But in the case of Taoist texts, there is a certain purity to this 'method'. Personally I think that 'certain purity' amounts to useless obscurantism and is a result of destructive intellectual elitism, but yeah. Eastern philosophy generally mixes 'plain reasoning' with this conveyance of aesthetic. So you have very plain points and thoughts to grasp, but they are used as a vehicle for the aesthetic. Whereas for Taoism the 'plain points and thoughts to grasp' are generally nonexistent.

the modern scholar was better but it looks like they dont make classes anymore sadly, but tms was priced wrong, they charged as much as tgc but for a class thats only 8 hours long sometimes less

i would say tho that great courses is definitely become more reactionary these days, that one a globalization that came out a couple months ago was total neoliberal horseshit, and that capitalism vs, democracy one that came out last weeks is "ok" but they claimed they made it in response to people requesting a socialism version of the "thinking about capitalism" class but instead of doing a survey of socialist thought, they spend half the lectures making fun of how shitty the soviet economy was, ok fair enough but i dont think thats what people were asking for

the "very short introductions" audiobooks are still the best audio intro to university level material, and the most "authentic" college experience

Learn to discover certain truths about yourself; not all of them will be negative truths, you may actually discover that you are stronger in some ways than you think, while in other ways you are weaker than you think. I would bet that you are stronger in the realm of self-improvement than you think.

There courses 'The Modern Intellectual Tradition' and 'The Modern Political Tradition' are both sufficient overviews of modern thought. They both serve as fairly comprehensive gentle introductions to modern western thought, well get you grounded and well orientated enough to start perusing more complicated sources without feeling totally out of your depth.

They have a course on sentence construction that I have just started and am enjoying. I am also going through their introduction to formal logic course.

They have a streaming site now that you can subscribe to instead to for around the same price as netflix. This is an entirely better option than blindly buying a course outright.

https://www.thegreatcoursesplus.com/home

To repeat: just keep in mind that everything they make is created with the assumption that the viewer is mostly ignorant on the subject, so if you are already familiar with a given topic you may not get much out of one of their courses on it.

Calm down edgemaster. The reason I’m not expecting much is because it is clearly a work that, if the reader isn’t careful, can allow for a great deal of self-projection as to its meaning.

I’m trying to read it somewhat alongside Neumann’s Origins and History of Consciousness and Peterson’s Maps of Meanings, to best keep in mind the less literal meaning of its passages.

That being said, five passages in and I’m not impressed.

The critique fits in his larger hatred against life-denying philosophies such as Schopenhauer's and christianity. I think he has a great point. There is something very un-human about stoicism. I remember Epictetus's advice in the Enchiridion about coping when a loved one dies being something like "just remember it's just another human." I think stoics blunt the human experience, while Nietzsche advocates embracing life completely, both the highs and the lows.
