Im in a CS program right now, but Im switching to Linguistics because...fuck it. They're training me to be a CIT manager of some fucking company and the last thing I want is to manage some asshole's network.

Not like any degrees are worth it right now anyways. We've diluted the importance of them by saying we need one to the point where it means nothing. Sure there are some degrees that people need for certain careers, but in the end just go to college to learn something you like to do. Better to be poor and do something you like than miserable and suicidal because your engineering degree actually DIDN'T get you a job

I'm getting a major in Computer Engineering with minors in physics and math. I started taking Japanese (I needed an extra class for financial aid purposes, and a language sounded good--spanish pisses me off and the only other language was mandarin), so I could potentially get a minor in asian studies or something.

got my masters in pathology (now work in biotech). Took only the minimum required arts classes.I'm a published writer who's more successful (in that way) than nearly every other writer I know with an MFA or English degree (creative death).

Chartered Accountancy is a fairly smart move. The few CAs I know make lots more coin than I do. Then again, they don't get to inject rats with chemicals or play with cool lab equipment all day.

One degree with two majors that aren't worth the paper they're printed on and a minor in a dying industry.

Or, go into advertising and make money selling consumer crap to insecure people. Public Relations is also booming and corporations of the future, including international groups, are going to want to reach English speaking audiences.

BA. in History, MA in Public History from WSU, I make about 43k a year doing Archival work for the National Park Service. I'm not going to be rich but my wife and I have a kick ass health care and three weeks paid vacation. Also I love my work and I get to work with actual history all day.

Face it, most STEM Jobs have been taken over by H1-B's. Almost all of my peers who graduated with CS Degrees can't find work short of basic help desk stuff which they could have been doing with out the degree. HP and Intel keep on laying off workers in our area while flooding our Uni with loads of Vietnamese/Indian students who are majoring in EE/CS and are then going to be sent back to their home countries to work in the plants where jobs that were once located in the US are now outsourced.

A BSc in Physics is pretty "worthless" unless you plan on going to graduate school in the same way that an English degree is "worthless" unless you plan on also going to graduate school. I've never understood Science Major elitism.

any quantitative bachelor + few finance exams = financial analyst or actuary = 60-70k starting

English bachelor = burger king
English phd = good luck getting tenure, assistant prof lol

quantitative science bachelors and phds not only have way more career opportunities but they also entail some social benefit and self-respect and creative work...english phds are very limited financially and in terms of being useful to society or anyone

Right now I'm an English major with a minor in education. I am constantly struggling about what to do in terms of a vocation and whether or not I should go to graduate school. Every person on-campus that I've asked about this always tells me the same thing: "you have plenty of time to find a decision." But the thing is, I'm starting my junior year; half of my college career is past me and I'm still measuring my futures in terms of abstractions. I like English, I enjoy studying English, now what do I do with it?

It doesn't help that my parents view my major as a frivolous thing and are constantly pushing for me to go back to the Philippines and start a business there (feels bad man).

The only real plans I have after college is to teach English abroad and save every single dollar I earn into whatever hopes I'll have after that road is done with. Things like love, family, well-being or whatever else are put on the back-burner simply because I don't think I've done anything to deserve to try to even envision them for the time being. Dollars and cents, personal enjoyment and satisfaction... guess I can't have it all, can I /lit/?

I just finished a BA in psychology and realized I don't want to go do a masters and practice psychology. Next Semester I'm starting a BSC in biotechnology and food engineering, I'm hoping to follow that up with a 3 year program to become a certified brew master and make beer for a living. In my ideal little world I'll find a job for a small brewery and not for a big time brewer, knowing full well that my potential salary will be smaller. I hope I will get to work for something or someone I enjoy and believe in, hopefully, something I could feel more involved and responsible for. I would also be fine working with tobacco, tea or coffee as these are also things I enjoy. I'm still not ruling out going back to school at some point, mostly for my own enjoyment and getting a masters in psychology, but I think that I will never really find the time for that. I know life doesn't turn out the way you plan it to, so I'm willing to accept a number of "plan B's" here.

That is my dream and I hope to realize it one day. I honestly hope everyone else in this thread eventually finds those things that will make them happy and content.

Classics, Scandinavian Literature, and a minor in Linguistics. Graduate school lined up, and because the departments are so small, already got a line on a school that'll be looking for a professor with my qualifications when I finish my Ph.D. in two years.

Used to be a physics major, then I realized I spent three years learning to be an instrument tech because I pissed off a professor by not sucking up to him for the bullshit easy work all of his undergrads do.
