it's probably an early and very well known example of a novel that begins as a narrator introducing himself as if he was going to start a story then fucking rambles on about ambegris and vengeance for a million pages (not that there is anything wrong with that) not really being a straightforward novel in the slightest. he meant that while reading the remainder of the text, in this case being the entirety of the text (seeing as the line you posted is the very first one in the book), you should mentally refer to the narrating character within the story as Ishmael. seems pretty straightforward, can't really understand why anyone would have any trouble with this

It's pretty hard and tiresome desu. Old English is nowhere near as suitable for expressing abstractions as modern English is. You can say it all but it always sounds more ''pragmatic and concrete'' so to say. But I am trying to make up for it with kenning and alliteration. It's a life long project of mine, not something I actively do on a regular basis. It's more of a pass time when I have some time to kill.

If you compare Melville's life to that of the biblical Ishmael there are some similarities.
Ishmael was the disinherited first son of Abraham, cast out since he was the son of the slave Hagar not Sara. Melville, similarly, was cast out from his rightful place since his father squandered his family fortune.

Ishmael is a semi-auto-insert of Melville.
