This wasn't bad. Interesting use of culture shock, I thought it well done.

Basically, US soldier gets isekai'd to fight against invaders. You can feel the hatred the author has for muslims, even though there are barely any in it; it's pretty funny. The religion in the other world is completely repugnant (if you are a normalfag like me who wouldn't participate in orgies), but it's treated fairly, as in the author doesn't condone nor condemn it and it is not something completely surreal that breaks suspension of disbelief. And, if you are going to build another world, I say go all out and forget our taboos, instead of a "middle ages mentality except all women must use gloves".

The second book isn't as good as the first, lots of interludes about army training while the main characters are in a month long sea voyage. I skipped most of those and I doubt I missed much. The rest of the book is interesting, though, and an important character of the first book gets developed and redeemed, which makes me feel sorry for her, she was such a shitty character in the first book and now that she's better all that awaits her is centuries of suffering.

The third book was supposed to come out at the end of last year, so, if the author didn't die, it's coming out anytime now.

Indeed. That sex scene was quite revolting, but I don't understand what he expected. It had been hinted at repeatedly. I understand though why he forgave her so fast: his new waifu is way better.

So do I, but I doubt it. It seems like a central point of their religion, I don't see her letting that go unless the guy decides he wants another wife (which he mentioned he didn't, as he couldn't love more than one woman at a time) and they decide to marry (and then she wouldn't be able to give """blessings""" anymore), although she would still be able to participate in them. Alternatively, Sapphire could be mortally injured in battle forcing her to use her superpower to save her sacrificing herself in the process, as that is the new spell she got, or something along those lines.

David was way too much of a Mr Nice Guy in the second book, and I think that's one of the reasons the first one was better. The first book starts with him shitting on mudslimes, progresses to him calling the girl a filthy second-hand whore, sloppy seconds, then goes to him killing a bunch of guys and talking shit to the pacifist priest, after that he kills a bunch more people and tortures another. The second book he doesn't do anything, he barely appears.

Overall I greatly enjoyed the book. My favorite parts were before their appearance was revealed, and also exploring what humanity does after it stagnates. I feel like the the book left me with an overall nihilistic viewpoint on existence, though. It kinda depresses me to think my hobbies and consumption of media and books, done in an effort to better/enlighten myself, really doesn't matter in the long run. In the end I'm just a insignificant person. The book really reinforces that the purpose of life is to leave something behind,whether it be culture or offspring to carry on and also do the same.

I liked it only because Vinge portrayed an interstellar Usenet network powered by planetary point-to-point links. Also nervous system work-alikes in alien species that were slow enough to modify the flow of conversations with them. I enjoyed Childhood's End when I read it a few years back. The twist was interesting but I felt more 'immersion' and connection to characters in the first part, things got wacky once transcendence and ascension were brought up. The overall story seemed to flow very well though.

The storytelling in Heroic Fantasy is usually smaller in scale and therefor more focused. Instead of the entire world or the universe being threatened it's usually just the main protags themselves or something much smaller. It also tends to be grittier without veering off into grimderp territory. Generally just a lot less pretentious and bloated compared to Epic Fantasy and more focused on action and moving the story forward.

I liked the spiritual style of it all. It seems like Clarke is an atheist who really wishes he wasn't.

I liked how every section had some mystery or twist. It kept the plot moving. But I accidentally googled Karellen so the first reveal got spoiled anyway.
I am skeptical about just how much it was necessary for the Overlords to conceal that they looked like demons. How impactful would the "red man with horns and wings" image actually be considering it doesn't even appear in most "official" religious texts but mostly just foklore?

I don't know how I feel about the fact that humanity was predestined to death by transcendence one way or the other. A lot of things, including weird alien shit, were described in great detail, but the Overmind magic was just that, magic. Nobody's choices really mattered (by human, not Overmind standards) so what was the point of it all? Maybe the point is that there is no point lol

Also there are multiple events in the book that could be described as "childhood's end". Which one does the title refer to?

Don't read Eye of the World, Blade Itself or Gardens of the Moon.

Though it slowed down a lot later on, the whole "in place of invented words, use obscure archaic English words with meanings vaguely related to the unknown subject and minimal context clues" gimmick really threw me off of the first third or so of New Sun, having to stop every second sentence to look up and then guess the related meaning of something, and I feel like the rest of my reading experience suffered for it. Or maybe New Sun is just vague like that. I know people are still trying to puzzle out what/if things were supposed to mean, since most possibilities were either undefined or without enough context to puzzle out definite solutions to. Maybe some consider that a positive quality, but I don't really care for it.
Long Sun went much lighter on the gimmick from the get-go and had a lot less inscrutable mystery elements, but that meant I spent less time asking questions without either direct answers or the tools to find them like in NS, and without trying to puzzle over thirty little mysteries while I read, I found LS more flavorful and overall enjoyable. Anyone else feel like this?

I've said this before but essentially the first book writes a cheque the sequels can't cash. There's this big setup for a space opera and then basically nothing happens in the sequels. I read them all but honestly you could skip them or just read a summary. I mean hell, most of the second book is about the main character (a zombie drone-soldier that was hijacked by a starship's AI) ruining a teenage girl's life because she was rude to another girl.

I honestly suspect she wrote the first book and was then told "we'll only publish this if you make it into a series."

A foundling is a child which is found and adopted, often as a servant rather than as a full member of a family. So someone or something brought humans to their "proximate origin" for some reason. So what's being said is, humans were designed and abandoned. Later, something else found some humans and moved them out of the Slowness for some reason.

It's never really explained in more detail. The humans in FutD clearly have some history going back to the original Solar System, so presumably they also know or at least have a very good idea of how they ended up where they are in the story. I guess it wasn't immediately relevant to the plot; there's never really an infodump about it.

The third book is basically a conclusion so you can stop there if you like. Afterwards the series goes off in quite a different direction. Latter books have some great moments but they're also very different in storytelling and setting.

The really rough parts (for me at least) were in the 3rd Chronicle (which is the books Bleak Seasons and She is the Darkness)
