Is there any value in reading fantasy books beyond a good story? Can we learn anything profound from the fantasy genre?

It it had value it would be literary fiction instead of genre fiction. Genre fiction is by definition worthless trash. Please direct further questions to the containment general.

They can impart certain symbolic motifs from our culture into the younger generations that they don't really get elsewhere now days. Which is rather a sad statement about broader culture than the qualities of fantasy lit. Also since fantasy lit is written by 110 iqs mostly, you will find some half baked philosophy that again could be a lead in for kids to more serious works. Of course all the benefits I mention are for 10 to 14 year olds, anyone older deriving such things from fantasy is lost.

Well a given work could easily have philosophical value. But I don't think any do, just as no literary fiction has any (it's as half-baked as any fantasy novel's philosophical aspects, sometimes more so).

In general, it could be useful for exposing a mind to new ideas and strains of thought. For a child those may be abundant. When I read fantasy as a kid it was quite educational. I think it's what made me an extremely empathetic person too, often unfortunately so.

If you think about it OP fantasy books are non-fiction books in another universe so they are equally as valuable as non-fiction.

A hack argument used by people who don't want to admit that good can come from genre fiction.

Fantasy can be a good element in a story, but if it is the main element the book can never be good

Years of people creating and consuming fantasy media proves otherwise.
