Because a part of us never grows up from being a mopey teenager. "Catcher" speaks to that aspect of our stunted personalities.

Because it describes the emotional experience of adolescence so well that anyone can feel like they relate to Holden.

I read that book a couple years ago because it was my ex girlfriends favorite book, and she always tried getting me to read it. Finally, she got it for my birthday, I think I turned 22, and I figured it was time. It's a classic, I should read it.

Every chapter I read, I kept thinking, "Hmm, maybe it picks up later on."

Too bad that never happened.

Oh, and I also recommended Dune to her. I give her one of the greatest pieces of science fiction to ever exist, and she gives me fucking Catcher in the Rye.

Me reading that shitty book was like a metaphor for our shitty relationship. No wonder it didn't work out.

Looking for Alaska should replace it in high school curriculum.

it's not. It's a book about a kid upset about dirty words who gets molested. It's interesting. But it isn't amazing. God, I miss Middle School. There's a lot to be taken from this book if you haven't grown up, though.
