How's the writing career coming, /lit/?

>> No.10873923

Doesn't work out for a writer who's actually any decent, the greats are just outliers who slipped through the cracks.

Good. Third novel will be published in May, $250k advance. Finally done for good with wagecuckery.

Ah, good to see another winner on /lit/. My 4th novel garnered a nearly 7-figure advance, so I'm hoping to break that mark with my 5th or 6th. No rush, I've got contracts for ten more books. It does get tiring, making time to actually write between all the young coeds throwing themselves at my feet and offers for speaking stints at universities and F500 corporations. Oh well, back to the grind! Gotta get that beach house in the Hamptons. This summer's going to be so lit.

I've been writing a lot of poetry lately.

Eh.

I earn enough from writing to cover my bills and travel internationally. I'm still a student. Started off doing academic jobs for my classmates, eventually applied for a blogging position out of desperation. My editor loved my topical coverage and bumped me up to 'full-time' within a month.

Don't earn a fortune, by any means, but I'm more or less settled until I finish university.

I've tried writing for leisure but found I struggle with motivation. If I have a deadline looming or am provided some sort of impetus, I typically fare well, but can never get my feet off the ground otherwise.

Not sure if I'd ever cut it as an actual writer, though. My editor and former employers all thought I was verbally talented, but I think I'm too afraid of failure to ever really try. Many of my favorite authors have such an incredible way with words -- simple prose which conveys more in a sentence than I could in a page -- that I feel unskilled in comparison.

Maybe I'll have the confidence after I finish a PhD or some shit. :/

You should’ve gone for something a little more subtle.
