Ugh, another fantasy writer that starts a long series and gets increasingly slower with each book, least he doesn't seem to be quite as bad a Rothfuss or Martin. Yet.

But guess I'm not getting invested in this series

Martin, Rothfuss, Sanderson... not a fan.

After seeing the video of Gurm having a happy with bubbles, toy cars, and the pool at the stone-colored dollhouse I kind of feel for the man. Seems like he's stuck in a place where he genuinely cares about his readers but can't decide what to do or how to fix the show vs books thing, and he knows he's not getting any younger. Seems pretty isolated, and just didn't give himself the right work habits before he adulted into a default operation mode.

Rothfuss seems like an arrogant fuck who coat-tailed on the backs of established magic systems and doesn't give much of a fuck about his readership. Comes across as if he's doing a market trend analysis and altering his books to suit that, rather than just, y'know, putting pen to paper and respecting the people who pay for his works. Then again, Star Wars exists.

Sanderson... don't know how to describe the distaste for that one. A kind of admiration or respect for someone who knows/figured out using philosophy and critical discernment to worldbuild. Yet also a strange dissatisfaction with his character, or how he presents himself and his works. Feels like the fantasy-fiction equivalent of the hipster-trash musician who wants to be seen as intelligent moreso than applying effort to develop it.

I don't think you can really lump Sanderson in there, you can make an argument against what he does put out, but at the very least the guy has a work ethic instead of seemingly trying to milk his supposed status as a nerd celebrity like Rothfuss does while never actually putting out the actual material that made him popular(and Sanderson could have easily have done that after the Wheel of Time books and a couple of his own, instead he continually puts out new material including stuff that's different from his normal works like Steelheart or some of his short stories)

I guess I've just developed a burning dislike of Rothfuss to the point I don't like seeing anyone else even compared to him.

Everyone starts talking about xianxia as soon as I finish what I think is supposed to be one, Cradle was really good. Read that because it's Will Wight though, not because of the genre, he could probably write mlp fanfiction and make it worth reading. If that even counts as one since it's not chinkshit. Moreso, there are hints that his attachment to Sev as Jonas stems from Sev having saved him in his past(but Sev's future). Sev also meets a boatsman in the scene where he Eata, Drotte and Roche who has the same speech patterns and jokes so it might be a cultural/occupational quirk. Then again, it might not. I don't think Sanderson's ever presented himself as some kind of writing genius. In fact, he freely admits that his prose is the weakest part of his writing.

I've been reading a lot of classic sci fi lately and you can tell that these people wrote for money. Jack vance and poul anderson for example can be really atrocious at times. You just can't write as much and as rapidly as they did without sacrificing a good deal of quality.

I read Wasp, an entertaining little 1957 science fiction novel by British author Eric Frank Russell. Here, Earth is losing a war to a vastly numerically superior Sirian empire. The book's protagonist is a man who volunteers to be dropped alone onto a remote Sirian planet with the aim of waging asymmetrical warfare; undermining the enemy war effort by inciting fear and unrest among the population; diverting as many resources from the front lines as possible, with as little means and resources as possible.

This begins with graffiti, rumor-mongering, and phony bombs, and soon progresses to collaborations with local organised crime, assassinations and sabotage. The narrator carefully explains the motivations and effects of each act in a way that is very instructive and gives the novel a somewhat subversive feel. In any case, these is plenty of action, cat-and-mouse games with the secret police (including a tense jailbreak scene) and a great deal of hard-boiled dialogue. Overall a 5/5 dino book and the most fun read I've had since Leigh Brackett.

I'm gonna shill the whole Liveship Traders trilogy. It's got some really neat ideas and does well to explore them, the family drama + fantasy thing is really neat, too. If you like alien technology you should check out Gateway. It's a novel about humanity trying to fix their resource crisis after they find an ancient alien space station. The station is full of FTL ships with pre-set destinations that they can use to find planets; unfortunately they struggle to understand exactly how the ships work so many of the "prospectors" die. Much of the book is dedicated to the weird but totally plausible economic system that seeks to exploit Gateway for humanity's purposes.

As for the human interest: the protagonist is a rich but depressed man talking to his robot therapist (in flashbacks) about his adventures on Gateway. The themes are survivor's guilt, sexual relationships, basic things like fear of death and desire for wealth.
He is unlikeable because he's an asshole who doesn't treat people as well as they deserve (he admits this), but you might find him relatable if you don't consider yourself super enlightened on existentialism but have thought about those things. For example, a quote I really liked:

I know it's nothing super novel or profound, but it kind of hit me for some reason.

I'm a bit of a world-building/map nerd, but I find the idea of dividing the world into three like this very interesting. The most obvious anomalies are Mid-East/North Africa, and Australia.
As an aside, I found Palmer's decentralised world of Terra Incognata fascinating, with something like New Zealand being in the EU making so much sense, even though it's geographically distinct.

Just finished this collection, it was highly enjoyable. It's made up of six standalone stories about life in different cities on a dying earth. From the cover and description, I expected a straight Vance pastiche... while there are shades of him throughout (particularly in the Paris & Rome stories), the book has its own unique feel. The New York story, for example, is proto-cyberpunk (the protag works maintenance on the outside of a giant skyscraper controlled by various corporations). The themes of historical repetition and reincarnation are visited throughout. You dumbasses who refuse to read womeme authors are missing out

And why not? If there's anything I've learned about computers over the years is that the more tedious some manual work is, the more likely it is that it's already been automated and you just don't know about it. It seems a no-brainer that there should be a tool to dump images into a program and have them arranged symmetrically in a grid while maintaining aspect ration. There are collage makers online that are pretty simple but most of them are for photos and don't do what I want them to.

I ended up just using Letterboxd for this shitpost I made about movies.

Finished Pratchett's "Reaper Man" and it was the most fun I've had with a book in a long time, dude couldn't go 2 paragraphs without writing something 1000% cheeky and hilarious. At least that was the case for around 2/3 of the novel, it's around this part that the wizard sub plot takes a dive in comparison with Death's plot and it just never regains back the earlier wit of the book. Also it kinda dragged on at the end but not too bad, feel like there were a couple times when he was writing the end but then just kept going. Still highly enjoyable.

The second trilogy gets all southern edges of the world/eastern mysticism and hindu mythology. Lady gets a lot more screentime. Still pretty fun, but its less "mercenaries do as they are told, deal with the moral crises later" and more "we are getting the band back together"

Just finished my re-read of Jurassic Park. Feeling like going on a Crichton Binge. His only other works Ive read are Congo and The Lost World. Congo was lacklustre, Lost World had dinosaurs so it was fine. Are his other works enjoyable? I think I would check out Eaters of the Dead next.

If you like mythology, try Shadowmarch by Tad Williams. He takes a while to get his plots going, so don't expect to hit the ground running like Malazan, but he's great at building intricate mythologies and then leaving hints for the reader to piece it together.
