Just finished the third book of the Gentlemen Bastards, eh it was okay. Then go to look if there's any info on the next book.

Ugh, another fantasy writer that starts a long series and gets increasingly slower with each book, least he doesn't seem to be quite as bad a Rothfuss or Martin. Yet.

But guess I'm not getting invested in this series

>>Magic: History, Theory, Practice - Dr. Ernst Schertel, annotated by Adolf Hitler
Edgy, sure, but interesting to see how Hitler thought and what he thought about something like magic.

>>History of Santhaaria
It's a large .png of a collective-creation, standard-fare fantasy world. A couple people working on it claimed up to 10-12, 000 people worked on it over the years. Whole website serves as a favourite example of how fantasy & worldbuilding can go wrong.

>>Maps of Meaning
The original, 10 years out prior to Bordan P Jeterson's reductivism of Campbell, Jung, et al's works. This one is Peter Jackson's intro to Cultural Geography, and how those two are intertwined.

Will also shill for two others, first up:
>>Archaeology & Folklore
This is Amy Gazin's edit, and part of the TAG (Theoretical Archaeology Group) series. If you're curious about humanity and how aspects of humanity have changed, or how we discern meanings and messages from the past -- much of the time with concrete examples -- most of the series is worthwhile. I'd suggest leaving out the Managing of & Theory of books because they're drier, less-applicable-knowledge kind of read.

Last shill, even if it is a rather imprecise blob of a meme:
>>Fief, A Look at Medieval Society from Its Lower Rungs
Can't say I care to know how many grains of rice are shat by peasants and dumped on the streets every hour, but this is the next best resource for estimation. If you learn by concept, the revised edition is an immaculate tool; if you're hard for exact quoted figures, precision, and rock-solid accuracy, maybe not the best resource.

>>10872713
>The Worm Ouroboros is a heroic high fantasy novel by English writer Eric Rücker Eddison, first published in 1922. The book describes the protracted war between the domineering King Gorice of Witchland and the Lords of Demonland in an imaginary world that appears mainly medieval and partly reminiscent of Norse sagas

>The Worm Ouroboros is often compared with J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings (which it predates by 32 years). Tolkien read The Worm Ouroboros, and praised it in print.

>Also, while The Lord of the Rings is written mostly in modern English, Eddison wrote The Worm Ouroboros largely in sixteenth-century English, making use of his experience translating Norse sagas and reading medieval and Renaissance poetry; a nearly unique approach among popular fantasy novels

>The tale's morality has also been described as uncommon in modern fantasy; in particular, it differs sharply from Tolkien's heroism of the common man in a fight against evil and C. S. Lewis's Christian allegory. The Demon lords hold to the Old Norse warrior ethic of loyalty and glory. The leaders of Witchland are regarded as noble and worthy opponents; in the final chapter, Goldry Bluszco compares them very favorably with the "uncivil races" of Impland.

>“But because day at her dawning hours hath so bewitched me, must I yet love her when glutted with triumph she settles to garish noon? . . . Who dares call me turncoat, who do but follow now as I have followed this rare wisdom all my days: to love the sunrise and the sundown and the morning and the evening star.”

Martin, Rothfuss, Sanderson... not a fan.

After seeing the video of Gurm having a happy with bubbles, toy cars, and the pool at the stone-colored dollhouse I kind of feel for the man. Seems like he's stuck in a place where he genuinely cares about his readers but can't decide what to do or how to fix the show vs books thing, and he knows he's not getting any younger. Seems pretty isolated, and just didn't give himself the right work habits before he adulted into a default operation mode.

Rothfuss seems like an arrogant fuck who coat-tailed on the backs of established magic systems and doesn't give much of a fuck about his readership. Comes across as if he's doing a market trend analysis and altering his books to suit that, rather than just, y'know, putting pen to paper and respecting the people who pay for his works. Then again, Star Wars exists.
>Star Wars existed, prior to Disneyfication.

Sanderson... don't know how to describe the distaste for that one. A kind of admiration or respect for someone who knows/figured out using philosophy and critical discernment to worldbuild. Yet also a strange dissatisfaction with his character, or how he presents himself and his works. Feels like the fantasy-fiction equivalent of the hipster-trash musician who wants to be seen as intelligent moreso than applying effort to develop it.

>> No.10873844

I don't think you can really lump Sanderson in there, you can make an argument against what he does put out, but at the very least the guy has a work ethic instead of seemingly trying to milk his supposed status as a nerd celebrity like Rothfuss does while never actually putting out the actual material that made him popular(and Sanderson could have easily have done that after the Wheel of Time books and a couple of his own, instead he continually puts out new material including stuff that's different from his normal works like Steelheart or some of his short stories)

I guess I've just developed a burning dislike of Rothfuss to the point I don't like seeing anyone else even compared to him.

Same speech patterns and improptu jokes and likely to have originated from the same place. Moreso, there are hints that his attachment to Sev as Jonas stems from Sev having saved him in his past(but Sev's future). Sev also meets a boatsman in the scene where he Eata, Drotte and Roche who has the same speech patterns and jokes so it might be a cultural/occupational quirk. Then again, it might not. "Investors, for example, say Amazon is in talks that will probably result in its earmarking $1bn to acquire the rights and to produce three seasons of episodes based on a science fiction trilogy known by the title of the first volume, The Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin, a work that is wildly popular in China. It will prove more of a blockbuster than Game of Thrones, some mainland industry insiders predict. The rights are held by Lin Qi, the chairman of Youzu Interactive, primarily a developer of online games that is listed in China"

I read Wasp, an entertaining little 1957 science fiction novel by British author Eric Frank Russell. Here, Earth is losing a war to a vastly numerically superior Sirian empire. The book's protagonist is a man who volunteers to be dropped alone onto a remote Sirian planet with the aim of waging asymmetrical warfare; undermining the enemy war effort by inciting fear and unrest among the population; diverting as many resources from the front lines as possible, with as little means and resources as possible.

This begins with graffiti, rumor-mongering, and phony bombs, and soon progresses to collaborations with local organised crime, assassinations and sabotage. The narrator carefully explains the motivations and effects of each act in a way that is very instructive and gives the novel a somewhat subversive feel. In any case, these is plenty of action, cat-and-mouse games with the secret police (including a tense jailbreak scene) and a great deal of hard-boiled dialogue. Overall a 5/5 dino book and the most fun read I've had since Leigh Brackett.

I'm gonna shill the whole Liveship Traders trilogy. It's got some really neat ideas and does well to explore them, the family drama + fantasy thing is really neat, too. I'm going to re-shill something that's been shilled to me here in /sffg/.
If you like alien technology you should check out Gateway. It's a novel about humanity trying to fix their resource crisis after they find an ancient alien space station. The station is full of FTL ships with pre-set destinations that they can use to find planets; unfortunately they struggle to understand exactly how the ships work so many of the "prospectors" die. Much of the book is dedicated to the weird but totally plausible economic system that seeks to exploit Gateway for humanity's purposes.

It's not that hard that's what she said. It has FTL travel and a robot therapist. On this scale http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MohsScaleOfScienceFictionHardness I'd put it somewhere on 4.

As for the human interest: the protagonist is a rich but depressed man talking to his robot therapist (in flashbacks) about his adventures on Gateway. The themes are survivor's guilt, sexual relationships, basic things like fear of death and desire for wealth.
He is unlikeable because he's an asshole who doesn't treat people as well as they deserve (he admits this), but you might find him relatable if you don't consider yourself super enlightened on existentialism but have thought about those things. For example, a quote I really liked:
>Anyway, that's what life is, just one learning experience after another, and when you're through with all the learning experiences you graduate and what you get for a diploma is, you die
I know it's nothing super novel or profound, but it kind of hit me for some reason.

Just finished this collection, it was highly enjoyable. It's made up of six standalone stories about life in different cities on a dying earth. From the cover and description, I expected a straight Vance pastiche... while there are shades of him throughout (particularly in the Paris & Rome stories), the book has its own unique feel. The New York story, for example, is proto-cyberpunk (the protag works maintenance on the outside of a giant skyscraper controlled by various corporations). The themes of historical repetition and reincarnation are visited throughout. You dumbasses who refuse to read womeme authors are missing out

I'm feeling like reading well-written stuff with fanfiction plots for cheap thrills. Can anyone recommend me something where a guy/kid is on the lowest rung of society in his village/city, then goes on adventure and returns as a mix of Richie Rich and Chad Thundercock to stick the aforementioned riches and cock into the faces of previously disrespectful elders and disinterested girls?

The wind-up and pay-off I want particularly is:
>you suck, we don't want you
>[adventuring sounds]
>you're so rich, cool and handsome now
>we so want your friendship and cock
Beauties who spurned him and now are desperately horny for him and big cheeses who treated him like dirt and now crawl on their knees for his favor are a big plus. So basically revenge by success.

Yes, I know I'm asking for garbage. I've recently read a series where the hero goes trough a lot of shit just to retire contentedly in a small cottage sans comeuppance, fame or glory. I need some recovery salve in the form of something like what I'm asking for.

If you know something like this that's also GOOD, I'd be surprised and thankful.

And why not? If there's anything I've learned about computers over the years is that the more tedious some manual work is, the more likely it is that it's already been automated and you just don't know about it. It seems a no-brainer that there should be a tool to dump images into a program and have them arranged symmetrically in a grid while maintaining aspect ration. There are collage makers online that are pretty simple but most of them are for photos and don't do what I want them to.

Finished Pratchett's "Reaper Man" and it was the most fun I've had with a book in a long time, dude couldn't go 2 paragraphs without writing something 1000% cheeky and hilarious. At least that was the case for around 2/3 of the novel, it's around this part that the wizard sub plot takes a dive in comparison with Death's plot and it just never regains back the earlier wit of the book. Also it kinda dragged on at the end but not too bad, feel like there were a couple times when he was writing the end but then just kept going. Still highly enjoyable.

The thing about Moorcock is that his career has been so long that he has violently differing styles depending on what decade you read of him and he habitually breaks and invents genres anyway. Here's my brief guide to starting with Moorock:

Finally finished all the current Malazan books by both Erikson and ICE. I have Black Company on standby but what other works should I consider? I have no idea what I want but I'm longing for something in a similar vein, if there is such a thing.

In what way? I can recommend some military fantasy to you, but it's not gonna have the crazy depth and scale of Malazan. Similarly I can recommend you some crazy in depth world building fantasy but it's not gonna have that punchy military focus.

I'll take the in depth world building, I suppose.

already read that one and The Wee Free Men, Equal Rites, Small Gods and Mort. Think my next step might be either Men at Arms or Pyramids.

If you like mythology, try Shadowmarch by Tad Williams. He takes a while to get his plots going, so don't expect to hit the ground running like Malazan, but he's great at building intricate mythologies and then leaving hints for the reader to piece it together.

Shame, i really like the dark, brutal, filthy setting of the game. Any good books (outside warhammer) that catch this?

Gotrek and Felix books are fun, they're basically Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser knock offs but they're really fun for it.

/tg/ usually has threads on this so go there for other suggestions and download links
